Fate of the Galaxy is a brand-new free-to-play space simulation based on the original Star Wars trilogy. A group of volunteers developed the game as a total conversion using the same engine as FreeSpace 2, a cult favorite space combat simulation from the late 1990s. In Fate of the Galaxy, players can take part in campaigns inspired by the first three Star Wars films or create their own missions at no cost.

Describing the gameplay, the developers say, “Choose to play as a pilot for the Rebel Alliance, the Galactic Empire, or as an independent adventurer/privateer.” The team has tried to stay true to George Lucas’s vision for the original trilogy, designing the spaceships and combat to match the films as closely as possible.

Fate of the Galaxy Is Out Now

Players can visit the official Fate of the Galaxy website and download the free launcher to start playing. The total conversion is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS, and it also supports VR. The installation process is relatively simple, and players don’t need to own FreeSpace 2 to play. Interestingly, Fate of the Galaxy also supports LAN multiplayer matches, making it a great choice for fans of co-op space combat sims.

There are different ways for Star Wars fans to enjoy the game. Fate of the Galaxy features fully voice-acted and interconnected campaigns inspired by the original trilogy. However, players can also take on individual missions or create their own campaigns using the in-game mission editor. Fans of Star Wars battleships might also be interested to know that the game features over 60 ship models with “fully working cockpits and customizable weapon loadout configurations.” Players can also rise through the ranks, form a squad, and command their wingmen in space battles.

Regarding combat, the developers say, “Similar to the original trilogy, primary laser weapons are used heavily, while secondary weapons such as missiles or torpedoes are used strategically and sparingly.” The team has also explained that the combat controls may differ from those in other Star Wars games with similar concepts, such as the X-Wing and TIE Fighter series. However, players can consult several detailed manuals before taking the controls of a starfighter.

Achieve the best possible outcome for each campaign after multiple playthroughs.

Fate of the Galaxy also promises high replayability. Players can influence later missions or unlock new objectives by performing well. Campaigns also appear to have different outcomes, as the game’s official description states, “Achieve the best possible outcome for each campaign after multiple playthroughs.” The developers also plan to expand the game with updates and new content, which should be good news for fans of Star Wars-inspired games.

Fate of the Galaxy is a fan-made project that is 100% free and doesn’t even accept donations. The team behind it is not affiliated with Lucasfilm Ltd. or Disney, and the game is not an official Star Wars product.
