Another update relating to Starfield‘s performance and stability problems will be coming out soon, addressing some recurring issues in the PlayStation 5 version of the game while also offering additional support on Xbox Series X/S and PC. Starfield has faced an upward climb with stability on PS5, and the upcoming patch appears to be a continued effort by Bethesda to right the ship.
More than two years after its initial launch, Starfield was finally announced for PlayStation 5 on March 17, arriving on the console alongside the Free Lanes content update on April 7. Originally an Xbox console exclusive, the outer space action-RPG from Bethesda had been rumored to be getting a PlayStation 5 port for several months before it was actually confirmed, but the launch on its newest platform hasn’t exactly gone smoothly.
Starfield Producer Says the Goal Is Still to Make a “Timeless Classic”
During an interview with GameRant, Starfield lead creative producer Tim Lamb acknowledged the studio’s intent to make Starfield timeless.
Yet Another Starfield Stabilization Patch Is on the Way
Since its release on Sony’s platform, there have already been two patches released for Starfield on PS5 relating to making the game run with more stability. Now, Bethesda appears to be ready to take a third swing at it, as another update has been announced for the week of May 10. The full patch notes will not be available until the update is ready to be released, but a post on Bethesda’s official Twitter account states that it is aimed at “multiple crash and stability issues and several gameplay fixes.” While the last two stability patches were released solely for PS5, this next one will also accommodate Xbox Series X/S and PC versions of the game.

Starfield has faced serious crashing issues on PS5 ever since coming over to the console. Early on, players reported crashes and screen freeze-ups that would occur as frequently as every couple of minutes, forcing them to shut down and relaunch the game. These reports were widespread in the PlayStation community, yet there seemed to be little consistency to indicate what was causing them, and they were occurring with regularity on both the standard PlayStation 5 and the upgraded PS5 Pro.
More recent comments have indicated that, for many players on PS5, the crashing issues are happening much less frequently than they were prior to the release of the last two patches, indicating that Bethesda has managed to make the game much more easily playable but has still failed to eliminate freezing problems entirely up to this point. Even though the next update will be for all available platforms, it’s likely that ironing out the remainder of the wrinkles in the PS5 version is at the top of Bethesda’s to-do list, especially considering the special features that were designed for the PS5 release of Starfield, which include adaptive trigger compatibility, quick menu access through the DualSense controller’s touchpad, and graphical PSSR upscaling on the PS5 Pro.

It’s also imperative that the problems get fixed, considering the large number of players who are likely waiting for a fully functional game. Statistics released by Circana indicate that Starfield had its best sales week in nearly three years when the PS5 version was released, becoming the best-selling video game for the week of April 11. Some of this success could be attributed to the launch of the Free Lanes update and the release of the game’s second-ever story DLC, Terran Armada. But despite conflicting reports from other sources calling the sales on PS5 “middling,” it’s likely that there is a healthy interest for Starfield on PS5 that has driven up sales significantly.
