Starfield Reportedly Debuts to “Middling” Sales on PS5

A new report suggests the PlayStation 5 version of Starfield has had a “middling” start on the platform, grossing $7.7 million in revenue with 140,000 copies sold in its first week. Starfield first launched for Xbox Series X/S and PC back in 2023, but has now become the latest first-party Xbox game to jump ship to its competitor, joining the likes of Forza Horizon 5, Gears of War: Reloaded, and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024.

Over the last couple of years, Xbox has switched up its release strategy in a major way. Exclusives now appear to be a thing of the past, as 2024 saw some big first-party titles, such as Grounded and Sea of Thieves, make their way to PlayStation 5. The following year then saw even bigger games, like Forza Horizon 5 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, also receive PlayStation ports. But the big question for many months was always: when will Starfield release on PS5? As Bethesda’s biggest RPG in a decade, it seemed as though the demand for a PlayStation 5 version was there, but now new sales data is casting doubt on that assumption.

Starfield Reportedly Sells 140,000 PS5 Copies in One Week

Speculation and rumors surrounding a PS5 version of Starfield were circulating online for months prior to an official announcement from Bethesda. The divisive RPG finally made its way to the platform on April 7, alongside a massive free update known as Free Lanes, and a new paid DLC, Terran Armada. Unfortunately, sales figures are being described as “middling” by analytics outlet Alinea. According to a report from the site, Starfield has sold a total of 140,000 PS5 copies in its first week, generating $7.7 million in gross revenue. While this may sound like a positive launch for a nearly three-year-old title, Alinea says Bethesda’s biggest RPG in nearly a decade should be performing better than it is.

For reference, the best-performing Xbox title to release on PlayStation 5 in the last 6 months is Ninja Gaiden 4, which has sold 257,000 copies on the platform since its launch in October 2025. This record is then closely followed by Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 with 245,000 copies, The Outer Worlds 2 at 160,000 copies, and then Starfield. Although the outlet describes the figures as “middling,” it has only been one week, and has already sold more than Avowed, Age of Empires 4, and South of Midnight did when they arrived on PS5. Starfield is also the fastest-selling Xbox-to-PS5 port in the last six months, as Ninja Gaiden 4 sold almost 100,000 copies in its first 6 days.

However, Starfield has a long way to go if it wants to beat Forza Horizon 5‘s PlayStation 5 release, which Alinea says has sold a staggering 5.7 million copies to date and generated more than $320 million in gross revenue. Other impressive ports include Gears of War: Reloaded, which has now sold 1 million copies across all platforms, with 70% of sales being on PS5. Then, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has now “outsold the Steam version and is on par with Xbox,” according to the outlet, which notes that about 4 million players accessed the title on Xbox

What won’t be helping Bethesda bump those sales figures up is a continued crashing issue that is plaguing Starfield‘s new PS5 players. Fans have blasted the RPG as “unplayable” on the console, as some say Starfield is crashing “every 2 minutes.” Thankfully, it didn’t take long for Bethesda to respond to the issue, which was affecting thousands of players. The studio says it has narrowed the problem down to a small number of causes and plans to release a new hotfix update in the coming days to address the crashing issues.
