State of Decay 3 Will Finally Be Playable for Some Starting Next Month

Developer Undead Labs has announced an alpha playtest for the upcoming State of Decay 3, giving some players a chance to try out the game early. State of Decay 3 was first announced during an Xbox Showcase event back in 2020, but has been largely quiet for the past few years. Now, the game is starting to show signs of life as the first alpha playtest approaches, signaling to fans that the latest entry in the zombie survival franchise is not too far off.

The State of Decay series is known for its tense brand of survival horror open-world exploration that places players in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, forcing them to scavenge to survive while building and defending their base from zombie attacks. Originally debuting back in 2013, State of Decay has grown into an icon of the co-op survival genre with the release of State of Decay 2 in 2018. State of Decay 3 finally giving players their first chance to experience its gameplay with this alpha playtest, lifting the lid off of the new features and mecahnics players can expect to see at launch.

An upcoming Steam survival game blends ideas from Valheim, State of Decay, and Project Zomboid into a harsh, community-driven experience.

State of Decay 3 Announces May 2026 Alpha Playtest Sign-Ups

In a new State of Decay 3 trailer, Undead Labs gives fans an update on the game’s development, including the annoucement of an upcoming closed alpha playtest slated for May 2026. In this trailer, State of Decay series co-creator Brant Fitzgerald invites fans excited about State of Decay 3 to participate in this playtest in order to provide the developers with feedback about the game as development progresses. Interested fans can sign up for the State of Decay 3 alpha playtest on the official State of Decay website for a chance to participate in the upcoming playtest.

Even if a fan isn’t selected for this specific playtest, Fitzgerald notes that any player that signs up will have their name kept on the list for future playtests coming throughout the year. While this means there will likely be other opportunities for interested fans to try out State of Decay 3 and share their feedback with the developers, it also implies that State of Decay 3 won’t be releasing in 2026, potentially pushing its release into 2027 at the earliest. For fans who are eager to get their hands on State of Decay 3, it sounds like signing up for the alpha playtest is their best bet for the time being.

As for what player can expect from May’s State of Decay 3 alpha playtest, Fitzgerald says he doesn’t want to spoil everything, but mentions 4-player co-op, base building, and combat will be on display for players to test out. State of Decay 3 will follow State of Decay 2‘s emphasis on community feedback as development progresses, with Fitzgerald reiterating the State of Decay series’ “Community is Survival” tagline in regard to how seriously the team considers player feedback. As such, its clear that May’s State of Decay 3 playtest will be crucial to creating the game fans have been waiting nearly 8 years for.
