Steam users can currently claim a story expansion for F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin at no cost, giving them a good reason to revisit the FPS in 2026. F.E.A.R. 2 has long been considered one of the best classic first-person shooters, earning a cult following since its initial release in 2009.
The F.E.A.R. series is known for mixing horror and the first-person shooter genre in an appealing way, though not every installment has received the same amount of love from fans. That said, the second installment, Project Origin, remains one of the most critically acclaimed FPS games, and its only DLC is also respected for the interesting spin it adds to the story.

F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn is a $10 story expansion featuring four new levels that became free to keep on Steam on August 3. There seems to be no deadline attached to the offer, meaning the DLC will likely remain free from now on. In the Reborn expansion, players take on the role of a Replica Soldier, allowing them to experience the game through the eyes of their enemy.
The base game, F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, is priced at $14.99 on Steam, but fans might be able to purchase keys from third-party sellers at a lower price since the game is quite old.

Although the Reborn DLC puts players in the shoes of an enemy Replica Soldier, it still features the franchise’s core gameplay mechanics, such as bullet time and explosive projectiles. It also marks the return of many iconic characters, including F.E.A.R.‘s feared Alma and fan-favorite villain, Paxton. Over on Steam, the DLC has an average user review score of Mostly Positive, meaning most players recommend it.
One of the cool gameplay features in F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn is that it starts with an action-packed sequence where players control a Powered Armor. For those unfamiliar, a PA is a weaponized exoskeleton that is quite similar to the Fallout series’ Power Armor sets. Later in the story, players will need to fight off other soldiers equipped with PAs, which could evoke memories of playing the first F.E.A.R. game. Most other gameplay elements, however, remain the same as the second installment, with a few noticeable changes to the level design and environments.

While Reborn is only a DLC for a 2009 game, freebie hunters currently have a chance to claim a full game at no cost as well. Until August 9, Steam users can claim Moonlighter completely free of charge. It is a well-received dungeon crawler with adorable visuals and an impressive 82% positive review score. Moonlighter normally costs around $20 USD, so between this limited-time free promotion and F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn, Steam users have $30 worth of content to claim and keep forever. In the coming days, they can also expect Deponia to become free to keep on Steam, though the exact date remains uncertain for now.
