Steam Users Have Limited Time to Claim a Classic Early 2010s Game Completely Free of Charge

Steam’s Free-to-Keep promotion has proven incredibly popular, and it’s easy to understand why; players who grab the offered games during their set promotional period will be able to add them to their libraries permanently. Unlike Steam’s Free-to-Play weekends, these titles remain with players even after the promo has ended, with the latest addition to the program being the cult classic game Deponia.

A favorite among PlayStation Trophy hunters, as point-and-click adventure games were considered easy achievement options prior to the introduction of shovelware, the Deponia franchise can best be compared to the likes of Monkey Island and Day of the Tentacle. Players will guide its protagonist around environments, collecting items and interacting with NPCs to solve puzzles and continue progressing. Taking roughly 8 hours to complete without a guide, this title can keep players entertained for multiple sessions, especially if they appreciate retro titles.

Per Deponia’s Steam page, 77% of user reviews enjoyed their time with the title. Recent reviews are even higher, with 90% liking the game, a stat that reflects its growing cult classic status.

Steam Game with 98% Overwhelmingly Positive Reviews Will Be Free on September 2

Steam users should mark their calendars for September 2 as a beloved game with 15,000 reviews and a 98% rating will be temporarily free to claim.

Claim Steam Free-to-Keep Game Deponia and Keep it Forever

The process for claiming Deponia is as simple as it gets, as players simply need to “purchase” the title at its 100% discount price of $0. There’s no reason not to add the game to one’s Steam library, as even if players do not plan on enjoying it now or anytime soon, they may eventually give it a shot on a rainy day. For those curious about Deponia, the following details should prove useful:

  • Release Date: August 6, 2012
  • Genre: Point-and-click adventure, puzzle
  • Developer/Publisher: Daedalic Entertainment
  • Steam Review Rating: 77% mostly positive
  • Steam link: Claim Deponia for Free on Steam
  • Deponia is able to be added permanently to digital libraries until August 20 at 1 PM EST, giving gamers a full week to claim and keep it forever.

Deponia developer Daedalic is very up front about how Lucasflim-inspired this game is, even citing a publication that described it as the German version of that iconic and influential studio. Deponia features all the point-and-click staples, and that includes a sense of humor that’s present in virtually every corner of the game’s 2D environments. Players control Rufus, a figure stuck at the lowest rung of the social class and stuck living in “literal mountains of trash.” Rufus has a simple goal: make money and enter a better state of living. He seemingly gets his chance when a rich woman named Goal (a fun play on video game objectives) plummets from the sky, and though he plans to return her to her husband for profit, he falls for her, and players end up needing to bring the two together.

If players end up liking Rufus’ story, or simply wish point-and-click games were more common nowadays, they’ll be happy to know that there are several sequels to Deponia that are also available on Steam. Named Chaos on Deponia, Goodbye, Deponia, and Deponia Doomsday, players have hours upon hours of additional content to dive into if they enjoy this first entry. The first of these two games can be grabbed for just $3 via The Complete Journey, which is on sale until August 17 and is typically $30. However, Deponia Doomsday will have to be bought separately. Alternatively, players can add the sequels to their Steam Wishlists and go through them one-by-one. All the games focus on Rufus and boast similar review scores from audiences.

If Steam freebie hunters want a very different kind of experience to keep them busy, NBA 2K26 is still free-to-play at the time of writing, though August 14 is the end of that promo. Once 2K26’s run ends, Deponia will be the lone limited-time freebie on Steam, which could get plenty of eyes on this underrated gem.
