Steam is offering its users a limited-time offer to play 2024 real-time strategy game Age of Mythology: Retold at no cost. Steam’s special deal will only be valid for a total of 72 hours, but players who try out the game and like it will be able to pick it up at a big discount afterward.

Published by Xbox Game Studios, Age of Mythology: Retold is a remake of the 2002 PC-exclusive classic Age of Mythology, which was nominated for multiple different computer game of the year awards in its time. A combat-heavy real-time strategy game, Age of Mythology: Retold has players take control of different real-world civilizations of the past and the gods that they worshiped, who can aid them in both resource-gathering tasks and wars with competing groups.

Steam Offers Age of Mythology: Retold for Free for 72 Hours Only

Now, a special offer from Steam gives gamers full access to Age of Mythology: Retold, but only for 72 hours total. The offer is set to expire on April 27 at 1 p.m. Pacific Time, so those who want to try stepping into the roles of Age of Mythology: Retold’s gods will want to act quickly. However, once the clock on the free-to-play offer has run out, players who enjoyed their experience will still have until April 30 to take advantage of a special offer on the game’s full purchase, letting them pick it up for $14.99, a 50 percent discount from its regular price.

In a nutshell, the gameplay loop starts off with players assigning workers to gather resources like food, wood, and stone, but they’ll also want to be quick about constructing military buildings, rasing armies, and building up Praise for their deities of choice in order to take advantage of their monstrous Myth Units and godly powers. Age of Mythology: Retold‘s four civilizations all have different units, gods, and strategies that favor different play styles, with aggression favoring the Norse, cautious defense benefiting the Egyptians, Atlanteans focusing on advanced economic techniques, and Greeks providing a nice balance that’s especially great for beginners.

Even those who got their fill of the original 2002 game may be interested in giving the remake a shot, if for no other reason than to see all the changes that were made in the remake. Aside from improvements to visuals, the remake increased the total number of houses available to a civilization by 60 percent, allowing for up to 160 different units at a time. God Powers were also reworked with the addition of a cooldown timer and an ever-increasing amount of Favor required to use them, as opposed to being once-per-game in the original game. Additionally, a fifth and final technological age, known as the Wonder Age, was added for the release of Age of Mythology: Retold, reducing the cost and cooldown of God Powers, generating Favor much more quickly, and providing major stat boosts to Myth Units and Titans.
