Steam users can currently grab the 2025 simulation game First-Person Data Explorer and add it to their libraries completely free of charge. As the Steam game gears up to leave Early Access, developer Star Weaver’s Production has decided to transition to a paid model on August 24, 2026, leaving players limited time to pick it up for free.
First-Person Data Explorer entered Early Access in July 2025, and has always stated its intention to move towards a paid model later in the process. The developer has made good use of Early Access and continued to update the game on a regular basis, and while it’s not quite ready to fully launch just yet, it’s finally in a state where the studio feels comfortable charging for it.
First-Person Data Explorer is Free to Keep on Steam Before Moving to Paid Model
In an update on Steam, the developer confirmed plans to move First-Person Data Explorer to a paid model on August 24, 2026. The game will remain in Early Access, but will now cost $2.99 USD to purchase, rather than its current free-to-play model. The good news is that those who own the free Steam game will continue to have access to it forever, and it can still be added to libraries before the transition. Players don’t necessarily have to download the game immediately – simply hitting the “Add to Library” button on the Steam page while signed in will be enough to ensure it’s claimed and 100% free to play forever.
There’s no doubt that First-Person Data Explorer is one of the most unique simulation games on the market. It’s described by its developer as “an experimental, sandbox-style environment where datasets are translated into physical features like color, size, motion and more.” Its goal is to let gamers visualize data “in fun and creative ways.” Data is pulled and shown from JSONL and CSV, which can then be modified during gameplay.
First-Person Data Explorer Key Features
- Translates datasets into physical features including color, size, and motion
- Explore these datasets and modify them in a physical environment
- JSONL and CSV file support
Right now, First-Person Data Explorer has only one English review on Steam, and it’s positive, describing it as “fun to mess with although hard to learn” and saying the “coding nostalgia reminds me of early video games.” Given how niche the game is, it makes sense that it doesn’t have many player reviews yet. But a free Steam game is a free Steam game, and for those looking for a distinct experience in the simulator genre, this could be exactly what they’re looking for.
First-Person Data Explorer is not available as part of Steam’s regular Free to Keep promotion, which has one free game (Deponia) to claim at the time of writing. The game has always been 100% free to play, and is simply changing its business model going forward. With the August 24, 2026 transition date communicated ahead of time, users have plenty of time to grab First-Person Data Explorer and add it to their gaming libraries forever.
