Steam Users Have Until May 17 to Play 2026 Fantasy RPG Completely Free of Charge

Steam users have until May 17 at 10am PT/1pm ET to download and play the underrated 2026 fantasy RPG, GreedFall: The Dying World. However, it’s worth noting that this is part of Steam’s Free Weekend promotion, not Steam’s Free-to-Keep promotion, meaning users will only be able to play it until that date, but a steep discount accompanies this promotion, too.

Unfortunately, this is less of an introduction and more of a farewell. GreedFall: The Dying World, also known as GreedFall 2, fully released in March 2026 after some time in Early Access. The game never really received much momentum, and not long thereafter, Nacon liquidated the developer Spiders. For those unfamiliar, not only did Spiders release both GreedFall games, but it also worked on Bound By Flame, The Technomancer, and SteelRising.

Following Steam’s recent Free-to-Keep Promotion of a 2025 Survivors-like game, Nacon’s GreedFall 2 has entered a Free Weekend promotion. The difference is simple: Free-to-Keep promotions give PC users a free game forever, as long as it is claimed by a certain time, and a Free Weekend game is only available to play for free until the end of the promotion period. As such, anyone who wants to check out the fantasy RPG can do so at no cost until May 17 at 10am PT/1pm ET. There is also a 30% discount applied when purchasing it between now and May 27, pricing the game at $35.

GreedFall 2 has the Dying World subtitle because it is not a traditional sequel, but a prequel to the original GreedFall. You do not have to play the original to play this one because it takes place entirely before it. In it, you become a native of Teer Fradee who gets kidnapped and taken to the Old Continent where, alongside a handful of companions, players must fight their way home (among other, more spoilery details). Overall, for fans who were curious about the Old Continent, it offers great insight into the world fans hear about a lot in the first one. The first game was hailed as reminiscent of BioWare’s Golden Years, but the sequel largely failed to live up to those expectations as far as critical success.

GreedFall 2 reviews on MetaCritic give it a 63 Metascore, indicating Mixed or Average reviews, and Steam reviews similarly put it at 62% positive, putting it in the Mixed category. In broad strokes, it’s more of an old-school hardcore CPRG than an action RPG, and while it had great lore, a great setting, and clear RPG ambition, its combat, gameplay, and general performance suffered severely. That said, free’s free and there will be an ongoing discount for it this month. If it does appeal to you, picking it up at a discount is hard to pass up.
