God of War Laufey is making a lot of exciting new changes to the franchise. The most obvious one is that Kratos will not be this chapter’s main character. Instead, his deceased wife, Faye, will take the lead as she enters a mysterious new world. While she’s dead in the land of the living, she has a new life in the Everywhen. The first game revealed for God of War Laufey offered a brief sneak peek into this strange new place, and it looks fascinating.
The Everywhen has raised more questions than answers, but there are at least a few things confirmed about the compelling new location. It was made clear in the announcement that God of War Laufey‘s Everywhen is an afterlife for the gods. It’s much more than that, though. The Everywhen is the birthplace of magic itself. Between the magical qualities of the realm and its reputation for hosting dead gods, the Everywhen has some intriguing implications when it comes to the overall God of War lore.
God of War Laufey, Explained: Who Is Faye?
God of War Laufey is set to follow Kratos’ second wife, Faye, and her journey in the Everywhen. Here’s what you need to know about her character.
God of War Laufey’s Everywhen is a Fascinating New Addition to God of War’s Universe
Okay, so the Everywhen is the beginning and end of all magic and the place where gods go after dying in the human realm. That much is clear. What isn’t so obvious at the moment, though, is how a magic-riddled realm where every single god is present functions. It’s already been teased that there are going to be some really cool-looking gods in God of War Laufey. Mongolian god Begtse and Egyptian goddess Sekhmet feel like a terrifying duo, but it’s still not entirely clear whether the two are ruling the Everywhen or simply controlling a portion of the realm.

Who is the Most Powerful God in the Everywhen?
The Everywhen isn’t exclusive to just one pantheon. Every single mythology goes to the realm when they die. Not every pantheon has a head god, but many do have a central deity who reigns supreme over the others. That raises the big question of who is the top god when all the other gods are lumped together in one realm. This is bound to create a massive power vacuum. No one wants to be at the bottom of the god hierarchy, so the Everywhen may be filled with constant god-against-god fights for power. After seeing their first reveal, it’s not hard to imagine a scenario where Begtse and Sekhmet are trying to join forces to gain control of the Everywhen.
This is purely speculation, but it’s very possible that Faye is walking straight into a war zone that is far more harrowing than just her run-in with Begste and Sekhmet. A god’s main purpose is to rule over others, and taking that into a setting where everything that lives within the realm is either a god or magical is a fascinating road for the story to go down. God of War Laufey‘s main villain is still likely being kept a secret, so seeing what other gods are potentially in the running to take on Faye is one of the most exciting aspects to think about.
It Isn’t Clear if Gods Know About the Everywhen Before They Die
God of War Laufey‘s announcement also teased that the Mask of Creation is connected to the Everywhen somehow. For those who need a little refresher, the Mask of Creation is an ancient artifact that can see into the god-filled realm. In Ragnarok, Odin stumbled upon a rift that saw into what many have now theorized is the Everywhen. He tried to look into the rift, and this is how he claims he lost his eye. Beside the opening in reality was the shattered mask. Odin’s obsession with the Mask of Creation blossomed from that moment, but Atreus broke the completed version of the ancient object before the Allfather could get to use it to glimpse into the Everywhen.
In the book God of War: Lore and Legends, Odin’s claims of losing his eyes are contradicted by an excerpt that claims he actually lost his eye after Mimir laced his water with hallucinogenic mushrooms. Despite that difference, Odin’s fascination with the rift is still a central part of Ragnarok‘s story.
This makes me wonder if every god is oblivious to the Everywhen or just Odin and the rest of God of War‘s Norse gods. It would be interesting if some pantheons were aware of the Everywhen and others weren’t. This would lean even further into the potential power vacuum that a competitive god-filled world would create. Gods who have prior knowledge about the magical world would have a big advantage over the gods who didn’t know about it before death.
God of War Laufey’s Mixed Mythology Has the Potential to Make God Encounters the Best in the Series
Magic is far more powerful in the Everywhen, and it’s incredibly hard for gods to be killed in this realm. There’s the possibility that dying is even impossible for the strongest ones. That combination of strength and magic is a really promising sign for God of War Laufey‘s boss fights. Greek gods returning feels like a given, and there is also the chance for fallen Norse gods to come back into the spotlight. The Everywhen feels destined to shake up previously held beliefs about God of War‘s lore because fans are likely going to see that these gods probably didn’t even have access to the full extent of their abilities.
There’s no telling what gods are capable of in the Everywhen. This new realm could even mean that gods that were in past God of War games have brand-new powers that make them even stronger. It’s both a terrifying and thrilling thought. Faye and the mysterious sword that she comes across in the gameplay preview are already a dangerous duo, and other gods are going to be just as powerful.
There have been theories that the sword Faye wields in God of War Laufey is Excalibur. Past leaks have claimed that Merlin will be a talking sword in the game, which could be a fun twist on the Excalibur myth. Leaks should be met with skepticism, though.
As exciting as this new chapter is, it won’t be clear how else the game will flip the series’ lore until Santa Monica Studio decides to reveal more. There hasn’t even been a God of War Laufey release date revealed yet. That will hopefully be announced when this year’s Game Awards comes around in December. Until then, thinking of what the Everywhen could mean for the gods and their place in the magical world is a fascinating rabbit hole to go down.
