Sega has released a new trailer for Stranger Than Heaven, which includes story details, locations, and a full cast list including Snoop Dogg. Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is best known for the Like A Dragon series, but it has a number of other games in its library. Stranger Than Heaven features characters caught in Japan’s seedy underbelly, much like those in RGG Studio’s flagship series. However, the upcoming game plays out over five decades in regions all over the country, rather than Like A Dragon‘s contemporary setting.
Stranger Than Heaven was first revealed during The Game Awards 2024, where it was showcased under the code name Project Century. Since then, Sega has revealed a little about the story, including that it will feature Japanese American protagonist, Makoto Daito, who escapes on a boat leaving San Francisco hoping to find a better life in his mother’s homeland. Starting in 1915, players will follow Makoto through his life over the next five decades. This sees him travel to different cities all over Japan, giving people snapshots of life in the country at different points throughout the century.
Stranger Than Heaven: The Most Important Events in Its 5 Eras Explained
Stranger than Heaven takes place across five decades, each one a distinct period in Japan’s history, which will likely influence the game’s narrative.
Stranger Than Heaven Cast Includes Snoop Dogg
Stranger Than Heaven features both Japanese and international performers. Snoop Dogg and his son Cordell Broadus star as Orpheus and “the veiled stranger” respectively, while another American singer, Tori Kelly, will star as Suzy Day. Japanese singers Satoshi Fujihara and Ado will lend their faces and voices to Takashi and Keiko Shirai, while actors Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Moeka Hoshi, Akio Otsuka, and Tokyma Nishioka will round out the cast following Makoto through Stranger Than Heaven‘s five different locations and decades. Protagonist, Makoto, isn’t based on any specific person, but is an original design similar to Like A Dragon‘s Kazuma Kiryu and Ichiban Kasuga.
Legendary Japanese actor, Bunta Sugawara, who passed away in 2014, will also star in Stranger Than Heaven via CG designs based on his archival footage with the consent of his family. His character, Genzo Iwaki, will be voiced by Takashi Ukaji, who reportedly shared a close connection with the late actor. The trailer also features a release window of winter 2026, when previously it was only known that Stranger Than Heaven would be released in financial year 2027.

Sega and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio have given very few details about the upcoming game, but have been quick to shut down fan theories about Stranger Than Heaven. It was previously mentioned that, following the death of his parents in 1915, Makoto Daito sets sail on a Japanese ship hoping to see the country his mother was born in. The new trailer shows Makoto’s rags-to-riches story of how he traveled to Japan with nothing before discovering his love and talent for music. Over the next fifty years, Stranger Than Heaven shows him developing into a master entertainer. The game will show five snapshots of his life: industrial life in 1915 Fukuoka, naval 1929 Hiroshima, the entertainment district of 1943 Osaka, seaside tourism in 1951 Shizuoka, and the seedy underbelly of 1965 Tokyo.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has characterized Stranger Than Heaven as a cinematic crime drama. There are numerous cutscenes in the trailer, but it also shows gameplay sections featuring both combat and performances. While Makoto will frequently be found having a brawl in the streets, he will also have to coordinate and perform shows with the other singers he has attracted to his group of entertainers. Taking place over both World Wars, these historical events play a role in Makoto’s story.
