Housemarque, the development studio behind the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive Saros, is already hiring for its next project. The Finnish game development studio is known for its unique take on bullet hell-style gameplay, with Saros serving as the spiritual successor to its last PS5 exclusive roguelike, the well-received Returnal.
The runaway success of Returnal, Housemarque’s first major AAA title, gave the Helsinki-based studio a breakout hit, quickly becoming one of the PS5’s earliest fan-favorites. Housemarque has a history of releasing games early in a PlayStation console’s lifespan, with the spaceship shooter Resogun serving as a launch title for the PlayStation 4. The game also received ports for the PS3 and PlayStation Vita the year after its release. Resogun is often seen as the successor to Housemarque’s first hit franchise, the Super Stardust series of shoot-em-up titles that got its start in the early 90s. Housemarque is also the developer of the popular twin stick shooters Dead Nation and Alienation.
Saros is the Next Best Thing to Returnal 2
Housemarque’s next game, Saros, has just been announced, and though it isn’t a direct sequel to Returnal it looks like the next best thing.
Housemarque Begins the Hiring Process for Its Next Game
PlayStation development studio Housemarque has posted a series of job openings to its official job board, kicking off the hiring process for its next project. The studio, which was acquired by Sony in 2021 following Returnal‘s success, has listed six available job openings, with the Lead Gameplay Animator position specifically mentioning that the developer is looking for employees to help craft its next big game. Housemarque’s next title, Saros, has not yet launched, making this job hunt a proactive step toward the developer’s future as they work toward the game’s release.
Additional job openings listed by Housemarque are for roles as Lead Lighting Artist, Lead/Principal Systems Designer, Principal Graphics Programmer, Senior Engine Programmer, and Senior Sound Designer. The listings indicate a preference for individuals with extensive prior experience, with multiple job openings specifically mentioning a preference for candidates who have shipped AAA titles in the past. Each position is noted to feature competitive salary rates, various benefits, and a “Nordic work-life balance” that allows employees to navigate their careers while continuing to enjoy their personal lives. The positions are not listed as being remote, with Housemarque also offering assistance for candidates who may need to relocate to the studio’s hometown of Helsinki, Finland.
Saros is scheduled to launch on April 30, and its release will mark Housemarque’s second foray into the AAA gaming space. The game will also serve as the studio’s first release since it officially became a first-party Sony developer. The developer’s intention to hire more employees makes it clear that Housemarque plans to continue expanding the scope of its titles. With Sony’s ardent focus on high-quality AAA titles in recent generations, Housemarque’s talents should be put to good use as they continue to release PlayStation console exclusives.
While titles like Super Stardust HD and Resogun are beloved among their fans, Housemarque’s unique take on the popular bullet hell genre hit its stride when the developer transitioned into the big-budget, AAA space. Resogun is one of the most unique titles available on Sony’s massively successful console, and Saros looks to follow in its footsteps while expanding the formula in new and exciting ways. Housemarque is one of gaming’s more forward-thinking developers, taking established genres and concepts and fleshing them out in ways that showcase a mastery of game design. Interested and experienced parties should feel encouraged to apply for these open positions with one of the premier developers helping to shape the future of video games.
