Subnautica 2 is dominating Steam at the moment, leading both the revenue and wishlist charts on Valve’s storefront. Its week-one sales are also in the millions, with Subnautica 2 thus significantly overshadowing both of its predecessors.
Originally slated for 2025, Subnautica 2 was hit with a major delay last summer after Unknown Worlds Entertainment parent company Krafton removed the studio’s senior leadership, accusing them of neglecting the project and arguing that the highly anticipated open-world survival game was not ready for early access. In March 2026, a Delaware court restored Ted Gill’s operational authority over the Subnautica 2 developer, reinstating him as CEO. The ruling left the executives’ $250 million bonus dispute with Krafton, as well as related damages claims, to be addressed at a later stage of the trial. Subnautica 2 received significant polish during this eight-month period of legal drama, with Krafton itself acknowledging as much, publicly labeling the game as ready for early access shortly after losing in court.
Krafton Will Likely Have to Pay $250 Million Bonus for Subnautica 2 That It Tried to Avoid
With the early access release of Subnautica 2, it’s looking very likely that Krafton will have to pay a $250 million bonus it tried to avoid.
Subnautica 2 Overshadows Its Predecessor by 800%
The five-year wait for Unknown Worlds’ latest title at last came to an end on May 14, when Subnautica 2 debuted on PC and the Xbox Series X/S, as well as PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. Over 110,000 Steam users were already in the game the moment it became accessible at 10 a.m. ET. Ten minutes later, the concurrent player count surpassed 210,000 people. By 10:20, there were 341,788 fans playing Subnautica 2 on Steam alone, according to SteamDB data sourced from Valve’s web API.

The momentum kept building after launch, pushing the new co-op survival game past 400,000 concurrent Steam players by 10:40 a.m. ET on May 14. Subnautica 2 eventually peaked at 467,582 players, reaching that milestone exactly 90 minutes into its early access release. In doing so, it improved the franchise’s previous concurrent Steam player record by a factor of 9.1, sending the series to unprecedented heights as hundreds of thousands of players rushed to explore its new depths.
Unknown Worlds took to Bluesky on May 14 to reveal that its sci-fi survival game achieved 1 million sales in its first 12 hours. Moreover, it managed to double that tally to 2 million copies by the following day, a company representative has confirmed. These intense sales are all the more impressive in light of Subnautica 2 being a day-one Xbox Game Pass title, which is all but certain to have capped its launch sales potential.
Taking to Bluesky on May 14, Unknown Worlds revealed that its sci-fi survival game sold 1 million copies in its first 12 hours. A company representative later confirmed that Subnautica 2 had doubled that tally to 2 million copies by the following day. The multi-million launch sales are particularly notable given that Subnautica 2 is a day-one Xbox Game Pass title, a factor that likely limited its launch sales potential.
It remains to be seen whether Unknown Worlds can sustain this momentum through future updates as development continues. While Subnautica and Below Zero both remained relevant for years after release, neither had a launch close to this scale. Subnautica 2 is thus both the studio’s biggest hit and most significant long-term player retention challenge to date.
