“Such a Cynical Amalgamation of Borrowed Mechanics” Baldur’s Gate 3 Exec Comments on Crimson Desert

Baldur’s Gate 3 publishing director Michael Douse has described Pearl Abyss’s Crimson Desert as “a cynical amalgamation of borrowed mechanics” in the wake of its successful release. Douse’s comments about Crimson Desert were not all negative, with the publishing director insisting that he enjoys the game despite its inspiration from other titles.

Crimson Desert is a game that has divided critics and players. Reviews for the game were decent, earning a Top Critic Average of 79 on review aggregator site OpenCritic. While this isn’t bad, it’s not quite the wide critical acclaim that many hoped for from Crimson Desert. But among players, it’s a different story. On Steam, the game has “Very Positive” reviews, and Crimson Desert continues to retain players at a rate that is rare for single-player games. Pearl Abyss’s latest RPG has really resonated with gamers, even if many aspects of it have left critics divided.

BG3 Publishing Director Says There is ‘Less Risk’ in Games Like Crimson Desert

In a recent X thread, Baldur’s Gate 3 publishing director Michael Douse described Crimson Desert as being “fun to play,” while also being “such a cynical amalgamation of borrowed mechanics.” That doesn’t necessarily mean that Douse thinks the game is bad. He just suggests that Crimson Desert‘s derivative mechanics are “Now That’s What I Call Gaming plucked off a gas station shelf, for better & worse.” This makes it feel familiar to gamers jumping in for the first time. According to Douse, this involves “less risk,” which is why he also claims that players should “expect a lot more of this in premium & F2P” going forward.

In a follow-up post, Douse pondered whether Crimson Desert‘s approach is any more cynical than other games in the genre that borrow from titles that came before, arriving at the simple conclusion: “Probably not. At least it’s adding spice to the stew, rather than removing it.” The response to Douse’s comments was mixed, and he had to remind gamers that he is, in fact, enjoying the game. One user pointed out that nothing is truly unique nowadays, but Douse replied, suggesting he “can’t remember the last time I saw the Greatest Hits of game mechanics in one pot.”

It is Now That’s What I Call Gaming plucked off a gas station shelf, for better & worse.

For many gamers, it is simply a case of expectations. Where some want the experience of something fresh, others prefer the feeling of something familiar, which can be a lot easier to jump into for a lot of gamers. This is especially true of open-world RPGs. A game like Crimson Desert can ask for hundreds of hours of players’ time, which can be very significant if it’s unlike anything people have played before. Its similarities to other games are a benefit here, rather than a hindrance.
