Surprise Black Ops 1+2 Ports Are Headed To PS4/PS5

Surprise Black Ops 1+2 Ports Are Headed To PS4/PS5

If you’ve been on the Call of Duty subreddit, or checking in on discussions about the series on social media, you’ve likely heard the rumors and reported leaks of new PlayStation ports of Call of Duty: Black Ops, and its sequel, Black Ops 2, bringing the hit PS3-era entries to Sony’s modern consoles. Well, Treyarch and Activision have finally confirmed one of the worst-kept secrets in games and shared a July release date for the new versions.

On June 17, Treyarch announced on X that 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops and 2012’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 were getting “ported to PlayStation” in July. The new PlayStation versions are being handled by Iron Galaxy, a studio that has had a hand in porting many games over the years. In a follow-up post, Treyarch confirmed that the two games will include multiplayer, zombies, and both campaigns on the new platform.

Kotaku reached out to Activision for more information, but was directed back to the tweets announcing the news.

It’s official: the original Black Ops and Black Ops 2 are being ported to PlayStation in July, courtesy of our partners at @IronGalaxy. 🤝 pic.twitter.com/uqTZ6u09B5

We’ve known about these ports for some time now, as dataminers found evidence of the ports earlier this month. And before that, rumors had been swirling online about Black Ops and its sequel getting remade or remastered. It seems those rumors weren’t entirely accurate, however, as Treyarch was very specific with its wording in the announcement post. These are ports. So while I expect they will run better and look sharper than they originally did on Xbox 360 and PS3 over 15 years ago, I’m not betting on them having too many new features or QoL changes.

The bigger question I have is what happens to the Xbox versions. Currently, you can play BLOPS and BLOPS 2 on Xbox Series X via backwards compatibility. It’s nifty, sure, and not something PS4 or PS5 owners can do. But these 360 versions are infested with hacked Xbox 360 players and don’t take full advantage of the hardware. Hopefully Xbox, the company that owns Activision, won’t forget to also port BLOPS and its follow-up to Xbox One and/or Xbox Series X/S in July, too.

We also don’t know how much these ports will cost. I really hope they aren’t more than $25 each. But considering the fact that the original Black Ops on Xbox 360 costs $40 to buy digitally in 2026…I’m prepared for these ports to be pricey. Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 arrive on PlayStation sometime in July.
