Surprise Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Update Accidentally Breaks Top-Tier Character

Surprise Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 Update Accidentally Breaks Top-Tier Character

It’s been almost 15 years since Capcom released Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, yet today, on June 15, the game randomly received a new update on Steam. The fact that a game which fans have long assumed Capcom was done with has received a patch after all this time would be news in itself, but on top of that, said patch has somehow accidentally made one of the game’s top-tier characters, Phoenix, borderline unplayable.

As spotted by Prima Games, the unannounced update went live earlier this morning, and, on the surface, it doesn’t exactly sound exciting. According to the patch notes on Steam, today’s update for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 simply contains “miscellaneous bug fixes” and “verified compatibility with Windows 11.”

However, according to players on the r/MvC3 subreddit, the new update actually does fix a few long-standing exploits and bugs. For instance, the “Kubota Escape” bug, an exploit that tries to force the character you’re using to swap out with a dead character, has finally been fixed—although said bug fix comes at the cost of introducing a new bug that completely breaks one of the game’s most busted characters.

‼️UMVC3 ON STEAM IS BROKEN RIGHT NOW!!!

ON THE LATEST UPDATE TO UMVC3, YOU CANNOT ENTER DARK PHOENIX MODE EVEN IF YOU HAVE 5 THE 5 REQUIRED BARS!!!

ILL KEEP YALL UPDATED WITH ANY MORE BUGS THAT POP UP AFTER THIS PATCH CAUSE WTF HAPPENED???? pic.twitter.com/j4i2Kje4zL

For those who aren’t familiar with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, Phoenix has a special “Dark Phoenix” mechanic that triggers when the character dies with a full 5-bar Hyper Combo Gauge. To put it in simple terms, regular Phoenix is considered to be one of the worst characters in the game, but triggering her Dark Phoenix shift immediately bumps her up to top-tier status due to the buffs to her damage, speed, and the rate at which her Hyper Combo Gauge fills.

Well, the new patch has accidentally made her shift to Dark Phoenix completely inaccessible. Now, when Phoenix dies with a max Hyper Combo Gauge, she instead just…dies. A user on the UMvC3 Discord actually found the reason for this accidental change: the game now checks to see if Phoenix has more than 5 bars of Hyper Combo Gauge when she dies, which is obviously not possible, as the Hyper Combo Gauge maxes out at 5 bars.

‼️WHY DARK PHOENIX IS BROKEN IN UMVC3 RN!
YOU NEED AN IMPOSSIBLE 5+ BARS TO TURN INTO DARK PHOENIX NOW???

So its that WHOEVER THE HELL messed with the code for Marvel 3 in this new update managed to ALSO mess with Phoenix’s function check on her Dark Install. The game USED to… pic.twitter.com/0g2xik7fb3

At this point, the community is working under the assumption that this is an accidental change, mostly because it would be odd for Capcom to remove an entire mechanic from the game instead of simply reworking it. Still, even if the change has annoyed every single Dark Phoenix main on the planet, it’s oddly nice to know that Capcom hasn’t completely forgotten about Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Hopefully this is a precursor to a more in-depth balance patch in the future.
