Switch 2’s New Space RPG Has the Kind of Combat I Wish No Man’s Sky Had

The Switch 2 got a surprise recently with the shadow drop of Everspace 2, and it could be a great option for No Man’s Sky fans who have found the game’s combat lacking. Everspace 2 and No Man’s Sky are very different games, but they scratch the sci-fi itch in unique ways that make both titles worth the time. There are plenty of things that No Man’s Sky does better than Everspace 2, but when it comes to combat, there is a clear winner.

Trying to pick sci-fi games with the best combat can bring forth a variety of different answers, since it’s highly subjective, but Everspace 2 is one game in the genre that really knows how to nail satisfying dogfighting. No Man’s Sky excels at a lot of things, but the combat still leaves something to be desired. Now that Everspace 2 is on the Switch 2, users who have been looking for a fresh sci-fi game to sink their teeth into now have the perfect opportunity to revel in some action-packed space fighting.

No Man’s Sky nails the thrill of alien discovery, but one upcoming PS5 survival game makes planetary exploration feel unfinished in one crucial way.

No Man’s Sky Is a Stellar Trip Among the Stars, But Everspace 2 Is a Reminder That the Game Still Has Room to Grow

It’s hard to believe it has been this long, but No Man’s Sky has officially turned a decade old. No Man’s Sky‘s 10th anniversary marks an important moment in a journey of ups and downs, and the way developer Hello Games has managed to bring the sci-fi adventure back from the brink of death is one of the most impressive feats that the industry has seen.

No Man’s Sky‘s release is one of the most notorious launches of the past decade, and Hello Games used it as a learning opportunity. The reason that the game even managed to hit the 10-year milestone is because of the sheer amount of effort and love the developers have put into refining the experience and bringing it to a much stronger state.

In honor of No Man’s Sky‘s 10th anniversary, Hello Games teased the game’s next free update. There weren’t really any specific details revealed, but the teaser at least confirmed that the next update will be called Cosmos. Now that the game has a full decade of major updates under its belt, it’s going to be interesting to see which features Hello Games focuses the most on with future improvements.

Hello Games has offered a consistent stream of free No Man’s Sky updates that have helped it evolve by leaps and bounds, but there is still plenty of opportunity for the game to have better combat systems. No Man’s Sky treats combat more like a side activity than something that’s essential to the gameplay, and I don’t have a problem with that at all. Combat isn’t for everyone, and a game as vast and fun to explore as No Man’s Sky benefits from appealing to a variety of different gameplay tastes.

That doesn’t mean that the combat can’t be more satisfying, though. No Man’s Sky‘s gameplay can still keep the combat as an optional thing. It would just be nice if Hello Games reworked this specific gameplay feature in a way that makes it more worth spending time with. For the game to have improved in every other aspect, it’s surprising that Hello Games has seemingly left the combat out of those plans.

If No Man’s Sky Has Left You Craving Heart-Pounding Flight Combat, Then Everspace 2 Deserves Some Attention

There are several key differences between No Man’s Sky and Everspace 2 that are important to mention first. No Man’s Sky is an open-ended open-world survival sandbox game, while Everspace 2 is a single-player sci-fi looter shooter with a semi-open world. It’s two completely different approaches to sci-fi, so don’t go into Everspace 2 expecting a one-for-one No Man’s Sky experience. Despite the significant differences, Everspace 2‘s combat is the shining point that makes the game such a fun time.

Features That Make Everspace 2 Worth Checking Out

  • Fast-paced spaceship dogfights with incredibly smooth controls
  • 25-30 hour main story
  • Side quests and completionist runs go well over 50 hours
  • Exploration is rewarding.
  • Eye-catching visuals
  • Ship and loadout customization is robust

Games like Diablo that are centered around loot and games that have fast-paced arcade shooting, like Star Fox, rarely come together. Everspace 2 blends both concepts, though, and it works quite well. Even though Everspace 2‘s combat can bring that space-dwelling fighter pilot fantasy to life, there are still some downsides to consider before buying the game on the Switch 2.

Everspace 2 is also much different from its predecessor. The first Everspace title was heavily focused around roguelike gameplay, which is a far cry from the sequel’s progression and open-world exploration. Everspace doesn’t have a native Switch 2 version like its successor does, but owners of the console can still play it via backwards compatibility.

The puzzles that the game features can eventually get repetitive. Its Diablo-style loot system also means that there is some significant inventory management, which gets frustrating at times. It’s not a perfect sci-fi game by any means, but it still has plenty of features going for it that make it a pretty solid diamond in the rough. Everspace 2 might never make it on the list of best looter shooters, but the spaceship combat quickly makes up for its shortcomings.

No Man’s Sky pretty much takes the cake as far as great open-world games set in space are concerned, but it’s always good to seek out a change of pace every now and then. Everspace 2 isn’t going to be every No Man’s Sky players’ cup of tea, and that’s completely understandable. The two games focus on vastly different goals, but action lovers could potentially get a real kick out of Everspace 2‘s approach to space combat. There are a lot of great games coming to the Switch 2 this year, and Everspace 2 being shadow dropped hopefully doesn’t keep it from landing on sci-fi fans’ radars, because it’s a solid interstellar dogfight.
