The Elder Scrolls Game Gets Major Update After 20 Years

The Elder Scrolls Game Gets Major Update After 20 Years

Nearly 20 years after its original release, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has received a surprise PC update designed to make Bethesda’s classic RPG easier to play on modern hardware. The latest The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion update comes courtesy of GOG as part of a broader game preservation program.

Released in 2006, Oblivion arrived in a very different era of PC gaming, and some parts of the original version certainly haven’t aged as gracefully as Cyrodiil itself. For example, modern controller support has historically been awkward, while something as simple as switching away from the game with Alt+Tab has caused many problems on newer systems. However, those quirks haven’t stopped PC players from keeping the RPG alive through mods and community fixes. For a two-decade-old game, Oblivion has aged remarkably well in some ways, but getting the original PC version to run comfortably on modern hardware can still feel like a quest in itself.

Oblivion Remastered Just Got a Brand-New Update for October 2026

A new Oblivion Remastered patch is now live for October 2026, bringing another round of fixes and improvements to Bethesda’s RPG.

The Original Oblivion Now Works Better on Modern PCs

Released on October 15, 2026, GOG’s new Oblivion build tackles several of those rough edges without attempting to remake the game underneath. Version 1.2.0416 GOG v3 adds support for modern controllers including the DualSense, DualShock 4, all Xbox controllers, Nintendo Switch Pro, Amazon Luna, Google Stadia, and NVIDIA Shield gamepads, along with controller hotplugging and an optimized default layout. The update also fixes Alt+Tab task switching and a memory leak that could occur while rebinding controls, adds five complete localizations, and establishes full compatibility with Windows 10 and Windows 11. None of those changes reinvent Oblivion, but that is largely the point. GOG’s version aims to make the 2006 game easier to play for PC gamers without turning it into something from 2026.

Chronologic

Rearrange the covers into the correct US release order.

That philosophy sits at the heart of GOG’s Preservation Program. Since the program launched in 2024, GOG has been regularly testing and maintaining games with the Preservation Program label so they keep working on modern PC configurations, while providing DRM-free offline installers and committing to future compatibility work. The program now covers more than 300 games, including classics like Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and the original Thief, and GOG says it has made over 1,700 individual improvements across all those releases. Crucially, the company also says it tries to avoid changes that would alter the original experience simply for modernization’s sake. A remake or remaster can keep a game’s name alive, but preservation means keeping the game people actually played alive too.

That distinction is especially interesting now that Oblivion Remastered exists. Bethesda and Virtuos’ 2025 release rebuilt the game’s visuals, animations, effects, and much of its presentation while also updating systems like leveling and controls, all while keeping the original game’s underlying identity intact. The result is undoubtedly an easier entry point for many newcomers, but it also changes enough to feel meaningfully different from the 2006 release. Players who want the original art direction, UI, progression, enormous legacy modding scene, or simply want to see Oblivion as it originally existed still have a reason to choose the older version. Oblivion Remastered is probably the easier recommendation for newcomers, but it changes enough that it can’t fully replace the version people fell in love with two decades ago.

GOG’s release now makes that choice easier, particularly for players who want the original game without wrestling with some of its oldest PC quirks. It is also DRM-free, requires no persistent internet connection or separate launcher, and reportedly runs well on Steam Deck. Oblivion Remastered may be the version built for 2026, but GOG’s update makes sure players don’t have to leave 2006 behind to visit Cyrodiil comfortably. As part of a game preservation effort, keeping that choice alive might be the most important upgrade of all.
