The Funniest Change In The Halo Remake Clears Up A Strange 25-Year-Old Fan Theory

The Funniest Change In The Halo Remake Clears Up A Strange 25-Year-Old Fan Theory

When the original Halo launched all the way back on the OG Xbox in 2001, it was a massive success. It also featured a moment that seemed to imply, according to a silly fan theory, that the Master Chief’s body killed everyone onboard a shuttle craft during a rough crash landing. Halo: Campaign Evolved seemingly addresses this silly fan theory and makes it clear that, no, you can’t blame the Chief. Or can you…?

In the original Halo, the Master Chief escapes the burning Pillar of Autumn UNSC battle cruiser via an emergency shuttle pod. On board are a few other soldiers and a pilot. However, when it crashes upon the mysterious Halo ring, the original game cuts to white and we don’t know what happens. The Chief wakes up inside the pod, and everyone around him is dead.

While some assumed the crash killed them all, others had a darker and sillier theory: During the crash, because Chief didn’t strap in, he and all of his heavy metal armor bounced around the inside of the pod and beat everyone inside to death.

You can find old posts online of people sharing this theory. And even recently, people will post that when they were younger and played Halo for the first time, they thought that is what happened. “As a kid,” posted a Reddit user, “I used to think that Chief killed the other people in the escape pod by ping-ponging around because he didn’t want to sit down.” Others joked that being killed by the Master Chief pinballing around inside the pod during the landing was probably a terrible way to go.

Regardless of all that, in the new Halo: Campaign Evolved remake, out now, Halo Studios makes the cutscene much longer and makes it clear that, no, the Chief didn’t pinball around the entire cabin and smash everyone’s brains in.

I especially like that the new, longer cutscene in Campaign Evolved shows him locking his arms and legs into a stiff position while tightly gripping the inside of the emergency shuttle. And then it shows the entire crash, making it clear that the landing was extremely violent and also clearly showing that the Chief never pinballed around. Not even one bounce! So no, this silly theory isn’t true. And in all fairness, it was never actually true outside of fans’ hearts.

Instead, the real explanation is that the pod was too heavy and damaged, and the impact killed everyone aboard not wearing advanced armor that can survive such intense landings. Now, a related question: Did Bungie choose to kill these Marines off like this because they couldn’t get them to cross the nearby bridge without dying, and so they opted to just kill them all to not deal with it? That’s another popular theory, though I can’t verify where this story originally came from, so it might be as accurate as the pinballin’ Master Chief theory.

“Wait, that isn’t what happened? Has my life been a lie?” asked another Reddit user when someone pointed out that the ping-pong theory isn’t accurate. Sorry, but at least those deaths won’t linger on Chief’s conscience. I mean, all the other deaths probably torment him, but not these specific ones from this one incident. So that’s nice.
