The Perfect Opportunity for Kingdom Hearts 4 News Just Came and Went

Square Enix had a perfect opportunity to address the long-in-development Kingdom Hearts 4, but fans have once again left waiting for any kind of news about the game. Kingdom Hearts 4 was announced back in 2022, but details about the game have been slim ever since. It’s been more than seven years since Kingdom Hearts 3 was released, though fans have gotten used to waiting long periods of time between numbered entries in the series.

The wait for the game got a little harder last year, when Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was canceled by Square Enix. The news wasn’t entirely surprising, given the number of delays and canceled beta tests, but the game would have at least given fans something to play while waiting for Kingdom Hearts 4.

Rumor: Nintendo Switch 2 Getting Critically-Acclaimed RPG

A new rumor claims that Nintendo Switch 2 users will have a new version of a well-regarded RPG to look forward to sometime in the near future.

Still No News on Kingdom Hearts 4

Square Enix has released its latest financial results, and publishers often use that opportunity to provide status updates on upcoming games. Unfortunately, Kingdom Hearts 4 received no mention, which could imply that the game is still a long way away from being released. It’s impossible to say how far along development is, but it’s certainly not a good sign that the game isn’t being discussed much by the company.

Fans of the series are clinging to any kind of hope for news or some kind of announcement. Kingdom Hearts 4 fans thought Tokyo Game Show was teasing an announcement earlier this month, but that tease didn’t seem to pan out either. It’s still possible the game could appear at Tokyo Game Show in August, or at Summer Game Fest, or any of the other big shows set to take place over the next few months. Until there’s some kind of evidence of that happening, fans don’t have any reason to get too excited, though.

At this point, just one trailer has been revealed for Kingdom Hearts 4. That’s basically all fans have had to go on for the last four years, and there’s been no indication which worlds players will be able to visit in the game. Disney has no shortage of candidates to choose from, including some movies that have become popular during the interim between games. For example, Zootopia was relatively new when Kingdom Hearts 3 came out, but the series has become a global success story since then. A world based on Star Wars also seems like a distinct possibility.

Video game development takes a lot of time. It’s an unfortunate reality of the industry, and it means fans are often left waiting long periods between games in their favorite franchises. Kingdom Hearts 4 was once rumored to be released in 2026, but that seems incredibly unlikely now, unless Square Enix has a huge surprise in store. At this point, all Kingdom Hearts fans can do is hope that the time spent on development will be worth it, and the finished product lives up to the hype. Since the original game’s release, Kingdom Hearts has become a truly beloved series, with fans across the world. A game released before it’s ready won’t make anyone happy.
