It’s been a big week for bad news in gaming, and that included Sony announcing yet another price hike for the PlayStation 5, the second increase in less than a year.
When the new PS5 pricing goes into effect on April 2, the base digital edition of the PS5 will have gone up by a whopping $200 since the system arrived in 2020. What’s driving up the price and what does it mean for the industry at large? Here’s a breakdown of what Sony has said and deeper context from expert sources.
Sony’s official word
Sony’s official explanation for the PS5 price hike is that “pressures in the global economic landscape” came together to make it “necessary” to raise prices once more. What the company is saying here is that the so-called “RAMageddon” situation has proven to be so much of an issue that Sony is taking steps to protect its profit margins, and passing along the increased costs to consumers in the form of a price hike.
Circana’s Mat Piscatella told GameSpot that he is “very concerned” about consumers getting squeezed out, at a time when increasingly richer households are already the majority of ones buying new hardware, at least in the US. “We don’t have a ton of benchmarks in history to look at,” Piscatella said, referencing the unprecedented nature of what’s happening here.
He estimated that component pricing and availability issues impacting Sony, as well as Microsoft and Nintendo, are expected to last through to somewhere between 2027 and 2030. Historically, game consoles got increasingly less expensive after launch, but that’s not the case these days, as the AI-fueled demand for chips is putting pressure on countless companies.
“We may have some time before we see things getting completely worked out,” Piscatella said.
Gamers may turn to cheaper options
With the increased hardware costs, Piscatella said he anticipates that lower income, younger, and less affluent gamers will have “no choice” but to turn to gaming options with lower barriers to entry, and ultimately lower prices.
“Whether that’s in mobile, free-to-play, streaming, PC, or whatever is to be determined. But we can’t see these huge price increases in things like hardware and content while everyday spending categories like grocery, gas, and housing also continue to get more expensive and not see it having an impact,” he explained.
We also asked Piscatella if he thinks the the PS5 price hike increases pressure for game developers to make changes to their strategies to try to reach more price-conscious consumers. He said “all options have to be on the table given current market conditions.”
He added: “Ignoring what’s happening in the macro environment and trying to operate with a business-as-usual mindset won’t likely work out all that well for anyone.”
Could Switch 2 also get a price hike?
Many are theorizing that Microsoft, which has already raised Xbox prices in recent times, along with Nintendo, could raise prices as well for their consoles for the same reasons as Sony. Nintendo, for its part, has said it cannot rule out a Switch 2 price increase, with its own top boss saying a price hike could happen if the situation surrounding chips is not addressed somewhat soon. Piscatella said he believes “all options are currently on the table for everyone” to address the current market conditions.
Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis, meanwhile, told Eurogamer that the supply chain “shock” and the increases to memory and storage prices led to an inevitable situation for Sony. Simply put, something had to give, and Sony opted to raise the PS5’s price yet again. Consoles are historically sold on thin margins at launch, with companies looking to more margin-rich categories like software, services, and accessories to help make up the difference. Historically, margins would improve over time as component costs come down, but all bets appear to be off these days.
“It is likely that Sony had price protections for its components for a set period and this may well have come to an end,” Harding-Rolls said. “With no sign of prices easing largely due to demand for AI infrastructure, Sony will have made the move to protect its slim hardware margins. It wouldn’t be a surprise if Microsoft and Nintendo followed suit in the not-too-distant future.”
Complicating matters further is the ongoing war in the Middle East, which Harding-Rolls said is likely to “compound the effect of the component price increases.”
For the Switch 2, Harding-Rolls said Nintendo would not want to raise the price of the machine so early in its lifecycle, but it remains a possibility that Nintendo will indeed do that. The Switch 2 is selling well, but weakness in some markets reportedly contributed to Nintendo slashing production, leaving some to wonder how much of a success the console actually is. The Switch 1, along with some accessories for the Switch 2, increased in price in 2025 due to the global macroeconomic environment.
GTA 6 looms large
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 6 is the biggest game of 2026 and maybe of all time. It’s also a game that’s expected to drive hardware sales. But with the price of new consoles going up and up, might that result in lower-than-expected sales for GTA 6? After all, you need to have a PS5 or Xbox Series X|S to play the game, as it’s not going to be available on PC or any other platform at launch.
That’s an open question, but Harding-Rolls said Sony and Microsoft will want to take “full advantage of the positive impact of this system seller [GTA 6] release.”
Right now, the most affordable way to get a new console to play GTA 6 is by purchasing the $400 Xbox Series S. In fact, an Xbox marketing lead pointed this out in a cheeky social media post following Sony’s PS5 price-hike announcement. That post may not age well.
The PS5 Digital Edition, meanwhile, is going up in price to $600, while the standard edition is rising to $650 and the PS5 Pro is increasing to a whopping $900. In short, it’s going to cost a significant chunk of change to buy a new console to play GTA 6, and that alone might turn some people off. Of course, GTA 6 is still expected to sell extremely well, but even if it reaches the lofty sales targets some are modeling, no one should expect GTA 6 to save the gaming industry from its many and serious issues.
