Top Gun Star Confirmed as Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Top Gun Star Confirmed as Fox McCloud in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Nintendo fans are less than a week away until The Super Mario Galaxy Movie releases in theaters. The universe-altering sequel to the 2023 animated billion dollar adaption has been highly-anticipated. Especially after it was confirmed late last year that it would be based on the beloved 2007 Wii game of the same name. The trailers have given us an insane look at the massive story that will include new characters like Brie Larson’s Rosalina and Benny Safdie’s Bowser Jr. However, this film doesn’t just include characters from the Super Mario universe. It was announced earlier this week that Fox McCloud from Star Fox would be joining the fight against Bowser and his evil son. Now we know who’s playing this iconic pilot.

It was revealed on Friday that none other than Glen Powell will be voicing the role of Fox McCloud. The actor, best known for his roles in films like Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters and The Running Man (2025), took to his social media pages to make the announcement. Jumping for joy like our favorite platforming Italian plumber in a movie theater full of Super Mario Galaxy Movie posters, Powell put on his best Fox cosplay. This included the character’s legendary jacket. His accompanying message was appropriately two simple emojis, a star and a fox.

A Larger Nintendo Galaxy

Powell’s Fox isn’t the only other Nintendo franchise character joining this Super Mario sequel. It has also been confirmed that Pikmin from their self-titled adventure series will be making an appearance. While their role looks to be nothing more than a cameo, the poster released this week seems to hint that Fox McCloud will have a larger role in this film. This also opens up the possibilities of Nintendo and Universal making a Super Smash Bros. crossover film. In the past, this game has included other franchises like The Legend of Zelda, Animal Crossing and Metroid. With an announcement this big a week before the release, the skies are limited to who else is in this massive film. Fox’s appearance in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is also exciting given he hasn’t had a game in his own series since 2016’s Star Fox Zero. A role in this sequel could hint that a new game might be on the way soon as well.

When Does The Super Mario Galaxy Movie Release?

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie flies into theaters on Wednesday, April 1, 2026. Alongside Powell, the sequel will star Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Keegan-Michael Key, Donald Glover and Jack Black. The trailer can be viewed down below.
