The Witcher 3 Remastered Gives Switch 2 Ports a Better Blueprint

The Witcher 3 Remastered Gives Switch 2 Ports a Better Blueprint

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the 2015 action-RPG that many consider among the greatest video games of all time, has just been upgraded via The Witcher 3 Remastered, a free Unreal Engine 5-powered upgrade for owners of the original. While it’s still the same beloved classic under the hood, The Witcher 3 Remastered delivers updated visuals, better controls, and various bits of new content, making it the definitive version to get reacquainted with ahead of the Songs of the Past expansion.

By many accounts, The Witcher 3 Remastered is a worthwhile enhancement of the original game, and a continuation of the terrific next-gen update from a few years ago. Aside from better visuals and performance, the update issues smart tweaks to progression, enemy AI, and controls, while adding notable new features like transmogrification and a dynamic combat camera, making for a genuinely fresh experience. This is true across all up-to-date PCs and current-gen consoles, including the Nintendo Switch 2, which is easily the most underpowered of the “Big Three” systems. Thankfully, it would seem that The Witcher 3 Remastered is still a meaningful improvement on Switch 2, and while it might not look as nice on Nintendo’s hybrid, it makes up for this in other, more specific ways.

Switch 2 owners get to enjoy the various visual and technical improvements in The Witcher 3 Remastered, but the game’s true appeal could be on the hardware front. Upon booting up The Witcher 3 Remastered on Switch 2, players will be greeted with a message detailing the following “console features”:

  • Gyroscope Mode: allows you to control camera angle by rotating the right Joy-Con 2
  • Motion Patterns: allows you to “use signs, bombs, crossbows, and more” by making gestures with the Joy-Con 2 controllers
  • Mouse Sensor: allows you to use the Joy-Con 2’s mouse features
  • Touch Screen: allows you to navigate menus using the touch screen in handheld or tabletop mode

I find it interesting how much these features seem to vary in terms of design philosophy. For instance, “Motion Patterns” makes sense for such a combat-oriented game, especially one that involves hand-signed magic and tools like explosives. It’s more logical than motion controls for a shooter or turn-based game, at least. On the other hand, Gyroscope Mode and Touch Screen feel like they could apply to just about any game. Mouse Sensor is a bit of a borderline case, since it could be implemented just as well in another third-person adventure game on Switch 2, but also feels Witcher 3-specific due to the game’s PC heritage.

I’m sure that there will be plenty of discourse about how much these features really matter for The Witcher 3, and whether they are meaningful inclusions or frivolous gimmicks. How well a given feature actually fits or purposefully enhances the base experience will likely account for much of the public’s opinion on the overall port. Speaking personally, the gyroscope and motion controls feel rather gimmicky, whereas the touch screen features feel almost like must-haves for Switch 2 ports.

In any case, you’d be hard-pressed to make a reasonable case against any of these Switch-centric mechanics. They are all essentially optional, being either easy to ignore or tied to a simple toggle in the settings. Even if one finds them superfluous, they don’t meaningfully detract from The Witcher 3‘s strengths, and only serve as other options. They are fun, interesting, semi-experimental inclusions that are unlikely to make or break the experience, and despite their relative lack of consequence, they should inspire a broader trend on the platform.

These unique Witcher 3 features mirror Cyberpunk 2077‘s Switch 2 functionality, indicating that things like gyro controls and the Joy-Con 2’s mouse features are of particular interest to CD Projekt Red.

What Other Switch 2 Ports Should Learn from The Witcher 3 Remastered

It’s cool that CD Projekt Red is making the most of the Switch 2’s unique hardware via The Witcher 3 Remastered, but it’s also a little sad that it’s this notable. What I mean to say is, it seems like developers have yet to make full use of Nintendo’s new hardware quirks: CD Projekt Red is just one of a few major, non-Nintendo AAA developers to leverage console-specific functions like the touch screen and mouse controls.

This is surprising when you consider how many games could meaningfully benefit from some of the Switch 2’s peculiarities. As previously mentioned, the ability to navigate menus via touch screen in The Witcher 3 Remastered is a considerable quality-of-life improvement, and as someone who spends a lot of time gaming on a Steam Deck, I would welcome the option to use my finger for quicker map, inventory, or quest log management while gaming on a handheld. For better or worse, this kind of feature is far more likely to come via a Switch 2 port than a Steam patch.

CD Projekt Red is just one of a few major, non-Nintendo AAA developers to leverage console-specific functions like the touch screen and mouse controls.

Mouse integration is another area that third-party Switch 2 games seem to overlook. For example, the oft-delayed 007 First Light Switch 2 release won’t launch with mouse support, as confirmed by developer IO Interactive. This isn’t game-breaking by any means (I beat the game on my mouseless PS5 without issue), but it feels like a missed opportunity. First Light is a third-person shooter, after all, and it already has a PC version with mouse controls.

Gyro and motion controls have narrower applications, but they are still worth exploring for Switch 2 ports. I can think of a number of games, especially platformers and party games, that would benefit from simple motion controls. Moreover, gyroscopic and gesture-based options can be a boon for gamers who struggle with finger dexterity, making them great for accessibility. All of this is to say that the Switch 2 has a lot of fun and practical features, and it’s about time that third parties like CD Projekt Red start taking advantage of them.
