Until Dawn 2 has been announced with an intense new trailer at the latest PlayStation State of Play. The original Until Dawn went through a messy development cycle. It was originally going to be a PlayStation Move game on PS3 before eventually being moved to the PS4. Effectively an interactive horror movie, the OG Until Dawn earned strong reviews and remains a fan favorite to this day. While there have been plenty of Until Dawn-like experiences released since then, many fans have been holding out hope for a true sequel. Their patience has now been rewarded, as Until Dawn 2 is now official.
As was previously leaked, Until Dawn 2 is being developed by Firesprite and will be released as a PS5 exclusive at some point in 2027. The new game will feature a brand-new cast of characters, following a group of supernatural influencers who fake their videos. They travel to a tropical island to film content, only to come face to face with legitimate supernatural horrors.

Like the original Until Dawn, Until Dawn 2 will be all about making tough decisions with serious consequences. One example seen in the trailer is choosing to push a friend off a cliff to hopefully save their life or jump off without them. Based on what’s seen in the trailer, it seems that pushing them off accidentally leads to their demise, as they hit the rocks below with a sickening thud. Decisions players make will cause branching paths, with the Butterfly Effect mechanic returning from the original Until Dawn.
Supermassive Games, the studio behind the original Until Dawn, isn’t returning for the sequel. Instead, development duties are being handled by Sony’s Firesprite, whose first game was the VR-only title Horizon: Call of the Mountain. Horizon: Call of the Mountain may not have done much to help PlayStation VR2’s sales woes, but it’s generally considered one of the better games available on Sony’s latest virtual reality headset, and was relatively well-received. It’s a good sign that Until Dawn 2 will at least be a technically-impressive game when it releases next year.

More information will be revealed about Until Dawn 2 in the months ahead. Gameplay reveals and a proper introduction for the game’s cast are on the way, though we recognized Dacre Montgomery as one of the characters, and Peter Storemare will be reprising his role as Dr. Hill from the first game. There’s still a lot left to be revealed when it comes to Until Dawn 2, but what’s been shown so far looks like it will definitely appeal to fans of the original.
