Valve Comments on Steam Machine’s Exclusive Games

Valve recently shared its thoughts on the idea of bringing exclusive games to the Steam Machine, with no current plans to make any games that will only appear on the console. The Steam Machine featured a wide selection of games at launch, already compatible with every Steam Deck-verified game.

The Steam Machine was easily one of the most highly anticipated launches in gaming after Valve first announced the console in November 2025. The Steam home console was billed as having performance on par with modern gaming platforms like the PS5 and Xbox Series X, while giving fans access to a vast swath of Steam games on launch with more to come later. The high price point, launching at $1,049 for the 512 GB model, has not stopped fans from getting their hands on the console either, with Steam Machine reservations even being scalped for significantly higher prices. Now, Valve is giving fans a better idea about its plans for the console’s game library.

Valve Changes Wording for Steam Machine’s 4K Capabilities

Valve changes how it words the upcoming Steam Machine’s 4K capabilities, and it may be a bad sign for gamers who value high resolution and FPS.

The “PC Library” is the Steam Machine’s Launch Exclusive

During a recent interview with Bloomberg, Valve engineer Loup Griffais spoke about the company’s plans for Steam Machine games. Griffais confirmed that Valve did not intend to release any games that will be exclusive to the Steam Machine, stating that restricting players’ access to new games is “not a great model” for the company. The Valve employee confirms that Valve considers the “whole PC library” its major launch exclusive for the console, given the Steam Machine’s similar architecture to gaming PCs. Griffais also shared that Valve views the Steam Machine as a way to “create meaningful innovation” in the PC space, attempting to make PC gaming “better for everyone.”

The lack of exclusives on the Steam Machine likely won’t come as a surprise to many fans of Valve. The console has been heavily marketed as being a home console for fans to access their Steam libraries, with features like the Steam Cloud allowing fans to continue their progress across devices. While Valve has been rumored to be working on a new Half-Life game, speculated to potentially be a launch title for the Steam Machine, the company would likely be leaving a significant amount of money on the table by making a Half-Life 3 exclusive to the console.

Console exclusives have always been a hot topic of discussion within the gaming community, with arguments both for and against exclusivity. Games that release only on a specific console have often been among the biggest “console sellers” for their respective platforms, with some of gaming’s most popular franchises, such as Halo and God of War, beginning as console exclusives. Xbox recently made a major shift in its console exclusivity practice after new leadership took over in early 2026, confirming that Microsoft will individually decide which first-party games should be Xbox-exclusive. The change reverses an early policy change from Xbox, giving many of Xbox’s formerly exclusive franchises multi-platform releases.

The Steam Machine’s long-awaited launch has not been without its fair share of difficulties. The rising cost of components, due to the ongoing RAM shortage, significantly impacted its launch price, with Valve saying that the Steam Machine’s price could rise further. Some Steam Machine users have even reported major hardware malfunctions with their consoles, including the Steam Machine’s “Red Line of Death” which mirrored the notorious “Red Ring of Death” that plagued the Xbox 360. While the release of the Steam Machine has not been perfect, the console remains one of the hottest new releases in gaming.
