Summer video game showcase season is almost here, and among the events we’ll be seeing in the coming weeks is an hour-long State of Play stream from Sony on June 2. We don’t know everything the company will be showing, but we know Insomniac’s Wolverine will be one of the headliners. What else should we expect? What rumors are swirling around that might give us some hints as to what Sony could be showing off? Let’s break it down.
When and where can I watch the State of Play summer showcase?
The livestream will air on Tuesday, June 2, at 2 p.m. Pacific/5 p.m. Eastern and will be streamed on PlayStation’s YouTube and Twitch accounts. The company already has a stream link set up for YouTube, so if you want to watch it there on Tuesday, you can go ahead and bookmark this page.
But what if I don’t want to watch it at home?
Well, you don’t have to, I guess! Sony has partnered with select Alamo Drafthouse locations to screen the whole thing for “free.” Admission itself is free, but you will have to purchase a food voucher. Tickets seem to be going quick, though, so I’d recommend seeing if there’s still space at your local theater right away if you want to catch the show on the big screen. The locations screening the show include:
- Raleigh
- Los Angeles
- San Francisco Bay Area
- Chicago
- Dallas/Fort Worth
- New York City
What PS5 games do we know will be there?
As of this writing, Sony’s only confirmed game at the show is Wolverine, which will kick off the showcase. Insomniac’s latest superhero game is coming to PS5 on September 15, so this will probably be the beginning of a big marketing push as the game nears launch.
But what other PS5 games could we see at the showcase?
Sony has a handful of projects in the works that we know about, and some of them are definitely more imminent than others. The Sony-published Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls was announced at this equivalent showcase last year, and it’s coming out on August 6, so now is the time for Sony to put the game in front of people along with maybe some new character reveals. There’s also a chance we see more of Horizon Hunters Gathering, the co-op spin-off of the Horizon series.
Beyond that, there are a few games coming from Sony’s studios that don’t yet have a release date that could feasibly make an appearance. Naughty Dog’s new sci-fi action game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet has been MIA for a while after its Game Awards 2024 reveal, and if the game is supposed to come out next year as reported, it could be a decent time for a check-in, unless Naughty Dog holds it for the Game Awards once more. The company also has Fairgames, a live-service shooter that is still alive despite some strife at developer Haven Studios.
Those are the confirmed games that we know for sure are real, but it’s also entirely possible Sony will reveal some new projects during the State of Play. There have been rumors circulating that a God of War spin-off starring Kratos’ wife and Atreus’ mother Faye is in the works, which lines up with Kratos’ actor Christopher Judge hinting that he was working on something with developer Santa Monica Studio. Sony has also reportedly been toying with reviving some of its dormant franchises, so we may see some old friends pop up. If it’s not my kleptomaniac raccoon son then I don’t want it.
What third-party games might be at the State of Play?
Sony isn’t going to be the only company talking about its games at the State of Play. The company has a marketing agreement with Rockstar for Grand Theft Auto 6, and while that game doesn’t need anyone’s platform to make a big marketing splash, if it were going to show up anywhere in these summer showcases, it would likely be here. But don’t get your hopes up too high. No need to spam angry comments if the open-world crime drama doesn’t show up, as it sounds like it’s still on schedule to launch later this year.
Last year’s summer State of Play included a ton of games big and small, from Cairn to 007 First Light, so really, what might fill the gaps between Sony’s games is anyone’s guess. There have been rumors of a Rayman Origins remaster showing up on the stream, some alleged Persona 6 leaks have started floating around, and there will also probably be updates on existing live-service games. There’s a lot of time to fill in an hour-long show, so hopefully there are some big surprises that we can’t even predict.
