Why The Flawless GTA 6 Is Set Up To Disappoint Players

Why The Flawless GTA 6 Is Set Up To Disappoint Players

With millions of pre-orders in the books, Grand Theft Auto 6 finally feels like a reality for 2026. The most highly anticipated game of the 2020s, if not ever, has been subject to a slightly strange discourse. On the one hand, the GTA 6 hype is overwhelming, and many players (myself included) cannot wait to get their hands on Rockstar’s project; on the other hand, certain announcements and broader shifts in the industry have injected a few drops of negativity into an ocean of excitement.

GTA 6 is guaranteed to be great. Say what you will about Rockstar, but its tentpole releases consistently succeed in achieving excellence. There’s no reason to predict an exception, but 2026 is not 2013 or even 2018. The world and the video game climate are different, and GTA 6‘s absurd popularity also means heightened scrutiny and a higher risk of disappointment. The bar is set so high that Superman might struggle to jump over it.

13 Years Worth Of Expectations

Hype Drives Disappointment, And No Game Has More Hype Than GTA 6

When GTA 5 dropped in 2013, 5 years had passed since GTA 4‘s debut, and that was a long wait by the franchise’s standards at the time. While far from flawless, the game managed to push the envelope of open-world design and console gaming enough to feel like a proper leap from everything that came before it. GTA Online was also a fresh concept when it launched a few weeks after the single-player mode.

GTA 6 May Not Be Able to Reach 60FPS

A new report looking at the hardware capabilities of current consoles and the detail of GTA 6 indicates that the game could be stuck at 30FPS.

People have been waiting a decade for a new Grand Theft Auto. Yes, Red Dead Redemption 2 came out in 2018, but that masterpiece doesn’t scratch the same sandbox itch as its sibling series. GTA 6 needs to live up to 13 years of compounding “what ifs,” “wouldn’t that be cool,” and “I hope we can enter every building.”

In 2026, gigantic open-world games are so common that their existence doesn’t elicit any excitement, at least not to the extent they did in the early 2010s. Obviously, GTA 6 is an exception that could sell millions by its name alone, but that comes with its own risks. With dozens of titles dropping per year, Rockstar’s project could do everything right and still feel like just another open-world game.

A Reality Stranger Than Fiction: The Challenge Of Modern Satire

GTA 6 Must Parody A Much Weirder Timeline

Since forever, Rockstar has infused its games with social commentary and satire, with Grand Theft Auto being the most obvious example. The series has always presented an exaggerated parody of excess and American culture. Jay Klaitz, the voice actor for GTA 5‘s Lester, publicly noted that the real world has become so bizarre and chaotic over the last decade that Rockstar’s traditional satire might lose its punch.

Even without going into politics, we are constantly bombarded with viral social media clips so absurd they could be from an alternate reality. You would assume that the current climate would lead to even better satire, but that hasn’t really been the case in any medium, except in rare instances. Considering game development takes years, GTA 6‘s in-game parodies could very well feel dated and tame compared to reality.

The First GTA Game Without Dan Houser

A Lost Voice, A New Voice

Grand Theft Auto 6 Dan Houser

Video game development is a collective process, and success or failure cannot be credited to a single person. That said, Dan Houser played a substantial role in shaping GTA‘s identity, serving as the lead writer of nearly every game. In 2020, Houser left Rockstar, and the reasons don’t really matter for this discussion.

While he might not be solely responsible, Dan Houser was certainly a key component in defining GTA‘s DNA, cynical voice, and story structure, and also contributed to other Rockstar triumphs like Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2. GTA 6 will be the first Rockstar single-player game without his involvement, a change that could be obvious in the final version.

Rockstar definitely has other quality writers who can pick up the mantle, but that doesn’t mean they can fully escape Dan Houser’s ghost. If the writing doesn’t land or lacks the anti-corporate edge found in the older entries, GTA 6 could feel like an impressive imitation of a Rockstar game.

The Clashing Tone Of GTA 6’s Bonnie & Clyde Story

Trevor, Where Art Thou?

Jason and Lucia are GTA 6‘s dual protagonists, and they appear to have a Bonnie & Clyde dynamic that could pave the way for an emotional and potentially hyperrealistic crime drama. That sounds absolutely great, and I fully believe in Rockstar’s ability to tell a powerful story. Now, the challenge is incorporating this type of narrative into the standard GTA sandbox experience.

Biggest New GTA 6 Details Officially Confirmed By Rockstar Games

With pre-orders now available, Rockstar has revealed GTA 6’s editions, bonuses, and price. Here is what you need to know about the open-world game.

Each entry has serious moments and complex characters, but they tend to accommodate the core loop’s penchant for madness. In GTA 5, you could simply switch to Trevor to hijack a jet or go on a rampage. From what we’ve seen so far, GTA 6 doesn’t seem to have that character, which could create dissonance as players transition from intense emotional cutscenes to over-the-top open-world nonsense.

GTA 4 and San Andreas suffer from this issue, as Niko and CJ’s personas really don’t fit the sandbox’s kill-happy gameplay loop. However, both games benefit from having relatively unrealistic visuals, even if they were groundbreaking for their eras. It is far easier to separate story from gameplay without photorealistic visuals.

The GTA 6 Price Controversy

Pay More, Want More

Boobie in Grand Theft Auto 6

Although not the first game to be priced this way, GTA 6‘s $79.99 price is more significant simply because of its influence: publishers might be more willing to follow in Rockstar’s footsteps. In recent months, it feels like every part of gaming has become more expensive, and this trajectory seems unlikely to change anytime soon.

At this point, everyone knows how much they’ll pay for GTA 6 at launch, whether it’s the standard edition or the $99.99 Ultimate version. The game will likely offer more than enough content to justify those price tags, but raising the price means you need to raise the bar. It also doesn’t help that Rockstar opted to avoid physical copies entirely, so you are paying a premium price for only a digital download.
