One of the co-founders of Wikipedia has been banned from making any edits to the popular internet encyclopedia, following claims of “canvassing” the website. The popular platform allows any user to edit articles and make contributions to the website.
Since its inception in the early 2000s, Wikipedia has become an icon of internet culture and has spawned countless similar websites. Wikipedia refers to itself as a “free encyclopedia” that anyone can edit, with users able to edit, fact-check, and correct any of the thousands of articles on the website. The platform has even inspired a plethora of niche sites like the Fandom websites, covering topics ranging from games like Genshin Impact to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, one of the creative minds behind the original Wikipedia has been officially barred from making any changes to the website he helped to create.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney shares even more controversial comments about how Valve’s Steam handles games that use generative artificial intelligence.
Co-Founder Larry Sanger Blocked from Editing Wikipedia Articles
Wikipedia co-creator Larry Sanger revealed through his personal Twitter account that he has been indefinitely banned from editing articles. The ban accuses Sanger of “canvassing” his posts on Wikipedia and “not being here to constructively build the encyclopedia,” suggesting that Sanger intended to influence high-profile discussions in specific ways. Sanger helped to found the Intellectual Diversity WikiProject as a means of providing a greater voice to “underrepresented individuals,” including topics like the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. The co-founder referred to those who decided on his suspension as a “mob” and claimed there was “no due process” regarding his ban.

Sanger has been critical of Wikipedia’s operations since he was laid off from the platform a year after helping to found it. In his posts about the banning, Sanger claimed that he had suggested in 2004 that Wikipedia would need a “community charter” in order to ensure the website stays accurate and unbiased. The co-founder has asserted that Wikipedia has been the subject of political bias, frequently claiming that the website’s articles and entries skew more heavily towards liberal ideologies. Wikipedia has also frequently fallen victim to vandalism on different pages, like angry fans defacing the Wikipedia entry for Silent Hill 2.
Larry Sanger being blocked from Wikipedia is not the first time the site has been the center of controversy. Since its rise as an open encyclopedia, Wikipedia has created friction in academic fields, with the open nature of the site sometimes leading to the platform being seen as a less reputable source. The platform has also been a topic of discussion regarding political bias, with some users receiving bans for editing articles to downplay real-world events or even creating fake historical articles. The rise of online political discussions even led to platforms like Twitch instituting new guidelines for political content, particularly during the 2024 presidential election.
Despite its controversies, Wikipedia has grown into one of the most widely-visited websites on the internet. Wikipedia claims to have more than 53 million registered users on the website, with 260,000 editors actively making changes to the platform within the past 30 days. The website has a staggering total of more than 7 million articles available in English, and has even been represented in games like Infinite Craft. Wikipedia has established itself as an online juggernaut throughout its two and a half decades, and shows no signs of losing that status.
