Windrose Devs Comment on Potential PS5 Version

After launching Windrose into Early Access for PC players, developer Kraken Express has been fielding plenty of questions about whether it plans to bring the survival adventure experience to console players as well. It’s been an interesting road for Windrose, a game set during the Age of Piracy, but underwent a substantial pivot. Originally known as Crosswind, Kraken Express originally intended to create a free-to-play MMO with PvP elements baked in. Eventually, the game shifted to a survival/adventure experience and dropped the free-to-play model.

Despite the massive pivot during development, the risk clearly paid off as Windrose achieved an impressive player milestone shortly after launching into Early Access. In the first 48 hours after launch on Steam, Windrose tallied over 500,000 players, even knowing that the game is planning a lengthy spell in Early Access. Still, Kraken Express continues to use player feedback to shape the game’s short and long-term future, as new updates and hotfixes have arrived in the days since the game launched. As popular as the game currently is, what’s more impressive is those player numbers only being from Steam, which hasn’t gone unnoticed by console players who are hoping the title comes to the PlayStation or Xbox as well.

Will Windrose Come to Consoles?

In the lead up to launch, as well as in the days after, Kraken Express has no doubt faced countless questions about a potential console port. In fact, its popularity really started to take hold after the attention Windrose received during Steam’s Next Fest event earlier this year, which attracted 17,000 people and strong player reviews. In the FAQ section on the official website, Kraken Express confirmed that Windrose is currently confirmed for PC through Steam, though it advises fans to keep an eye on official channels for any future platform announcements.

In fact, an official spokesperson provided a bit more context to Gamespot, indicating that the team currently doesn’t have any further updates about Windrose on consoles. However, they remain enthusiastic about eventually getting to that point, but are focused on getting Windrose to version 1.0 before that happens. With an Early Access plan that could be as long as 2.5 years, console fans seem like they have a lengthy wait ahead of them.

Thankfully, it appears that console players will have a solid alternative option to tide them over. One of the worst-kept secrets from Ubisoft was officially confirmed with Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Unfortunately, after that confirmation, Ubisoft has largely gone silent and instead, fans heard some not so great news in regards to layoffs and restructuring at the company.

Still, rumors continue to swirl around the game, with many insiders teasing that it isn’t simply a reskin and instead has been reworked to include new content and updates from the original Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. While nothing is officially confirmed, it’s also believed that Resynced is set to launch on July 9, meaning fans won’t have to wait too much longer to re-experience Edward Kenway’s journey.
