Xbox Achievements Are Getting a Change, But Not the One We’ve Been Asking For

Xbox Achievements Are Getting a Change, But Not the One We’ve Been Asking For

Xbox is implementing some changes to its achievement system, though they aren’t the changes players may have been hoping for. Starting with the launch of the Xbox 360 in 2005, Xbox became the first platform to launch a console-wide achievement service accessible across multiple games from both first-party developers and third-party publishers. By completing levels, tasks, and challenges across different games, players can earn Gamerscore. Gamerscore is a point system that increases upon completing games and serves as a showcase of a player’s skill across various titles.

The success of Xbox achievements led to other publishers and entities adding their own approximation of gaming achievements to their platforms. Valve initially followed suit by adding achievements to Steam, allowing PC and Mac users to earn points for completing games, and Sony implemented Trophies, its own achievement system, on the PlayStation 3 starting in 2008. Microsoft and Sony’s achievement systems would continue to be featured on future consoles, and even outside of the console space, websites such as RetroAchievements were established that retroactively added achievements to games on older platforms that featured no such systems.

Nearly 40% of Xbox Games Released in 2025 Were Gamerscore Shovelware

TrueAchievements reports that hundreds of low-effort Xbox releases last year were built primarily to farm easy achievements.

Xbox Cloud Dashboard Offers Visual Changes to Achievements, No Functional Differences

As reported on TrueAchievements, Xbox’s achievements have received a visual redesign. This coincides with the rollout of the revised Xbox Cloud Gaming dashboard, which is currently in a preview phase via web browsers. The new achievement markers feature updated trophy and diamond icons for normal and rare achievements, respectively, with slightly darker color schemes and new icons adorned by a wreath. The animations that play upon unlocking them are toned down in comparison to the standard pop-ups, merely sliding into the screen at the bottom.

As part of this refresh, achievements will function as they typically have, with no major overhauls beyond the aesthetics. While reports have indicated that Xbox has wanted to overhaul achievements, this new update will not be the sweeping change gamers may have expected. Furthermore, considering that this Xbox Cloud Gaming interface is in preview, not everything showcased is finalized, and some oddities are present. Noticeably, while normal achievements still play the standard chime upon being unlocked, rare achievements feature no sound whatsoever when they appear on the screen.

A bunch of Xbox games just added easy achievements

Xbox’s visual changes to the achievements feature no functional changes, and thus don’t include one change Xbox players have been hoping for: a variant of PlayStation’s “Platinum” Trophy. On Sony’s platform, players can receive bronze, silver, and gold trophies depending on the specific accomplishment in a game, and a Platinum Trophy is unlocked upon earning every base achievement. Xbox does not feature any tier system for its achievements, nor does it offer any congratulatory reward upon earning every bit of gamerscore in a title.

The Platinum Trophy is also helpful to PlayStation gamers, as trophies added through downloadable content are separated into different sub-sections within a game, so the trophy is not revoked from players if a game receives new trophies through add-ons. Comparatively, Xbox players can earn 100% of achievements in a base game, but then stand to lose that 100% award if a game receives new achievements through downloadable content. Xbox should add a Platinum Trophy equivalent, but if it can’t, adding separate tiers for base-game and DLC achievements would go a long way to helping players not lose their accomplishment of earning every achievement.
