Xbox Game Pass Adds Day-One Game That Flips Vampire Survivors Formula on Its Head

Xbox Game Pass Adds Day-One Game That Flips Vampire Survivors Formula on Its Head

1The Xbox Game Pass library expands yet again, this time with a day-one release called Ascend to Zero. This is the third title to join the subscription service in July 2026 and the 111th Xbox Game Pass release of 2026.

Developed and published by Krafton subsidiary Flyway Games, Ascend to Zero is a single-player action roguelike RPG clearly influenced by the survivors-like subgenre, which grew steadily in popularity during the first half of the 2020s. The colorful game challenges players to battle enemy swarms while rapidly improving their weapons, equipment, and character stats during runs. Classic roguelike premise aside, Ascend to Zero flips the survivors-like formula on its head by asking players not to endure for as long as possible, but advance as far as they can with just 30 seconds on the clock and hostilities all around. While that objective is by itself unconventional enough to give the game a clear identity, Ascend to Zero‘s experiments with timers do not end there.

Xbox Game Pass Losing 12 Games on July 15

Xbox Game Pass is suffering one of its largest exoduses in years on July 15, When a dozen titles are scheduled to leave the service.

Ascend to Zero Turns Time into a Weapon and General-Purpose Resource

Ascend to Zero is available on Xbox Game Pass as of the early morning hours Eastern on July 13, having joined the service day and date with the PC and Xbox Series X/S version. Its day-one launch continues a years-long pattern of Microsoft’s content catalog embracing the survivors-like genre with a steady influx of new titles, a trend that goes back to Vampire Survivors itself joining Xbox Game Pass in 2022. That is not to say that Flyway Games is interested in retreading old ground here; Ascend to Zero is about as distinctive as a bullet heaven game can feasibly be, in large part due to its gameplay loop treating time as a resource that players can spend to advance, suspend to, e.g. freeze enemies, and even recover by defeating powerful foes.

The result is a more aggressive gameplay loop than simply circling an arena until a fixed timer expires. Each run rewards players for finding the fastest route to the summit, collecting XP, gear, and tech chips, and choosing the right moments to pause the battlefield. Six playable avatars add variety through distinct growth profiles and special abilities. To support its 30-second structure, the game uses an extreme progression curve that can push a character from level 1 into the hundreds of thousands during a single run. This design makes Ascend to Zero exceptionally fast-paced, with the action escalating more quickly than in even the most hectic survivors-like titles available on Xbox Game Pass and beyond.

As per usual, the second monthly wave of Xbox Game Pass releases will be formally announced a little bit after the month’s halfway point. Specifically, Microsoft has favored the third Tuesday of the month for such reveals as of late, so if that pattern holds, July 21 will be the day that the company formalized the Wave 2 Xbox Game Pass content roadmap.
