In late July, a large number of Xbox players discovered they could no longer play their games. A serious outage was preventing people from being able to log in, see their game libraries, and worse, even from launching previously downloaded games, reminding everyone that in our current age you own nothing and all your games can be taken away at any moment. Now, Xbox is reporting it’s found the cause of the issue, and it seems it was worse than just an outage—it also exposed a serious bug that caused “cascading issues with library enumeration,” which are some of my least favorite cascading issues. That bug has now, says Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet, been fixed, and further measures are being introduced to try to prevent a repeat of the situation.
“An underlying service required for XBOX Home Console sharing and Game Pass purchased content, as well as some PC scenarios, experienced an outage whereby an update to the system put some services in an unresponsive state,” writes Van Vliet on his X account, explaining the cause of the problems. But this was then exacerbated by the bug in “the XBOX client software stack.” (The software stack is Xbox’s way of running three cooperating operation systems at the same time.) This “caused other license checks to also fail when that first service went down. These two issues created some cascading failure scenarios that affected some players’ ability to launch games and causing cascading issues with library enumeration.”
I wanted to provide an update on the incident affecting some players trying to launch games and access other game library features last week.

In other words, Xboxes couldn’t check for licenses before launching games. Van Vliet continues his explanation:
We are transitioning ownership of the underlying licensing service to the XBOX team while our engineers are actively hardening the services and infrastructure for future updates. The client bug has been fixed in an upcoming release, which starts rolling out today, August 10, and becomes mandatory August 17.
Uh-huh, uh-huh, hardening those services. The key info here appears to be that the bug that made everything go extra haywire on this occasion has been fixed, and the fix is now rolling out to your console. And there are plans to continue trying to address this situation with more updates to come over the next few months.
Which is all to say: Microsoft is working super-hard on trying to better hide the fact that you don’t own any of the games you “buy” from its digital stores, and that just a single outage can remove your ability to launch anything, even if it’s downloaded to your console. Meanwhile, one day in the future that “outage” will be deliberate, as the Xbox Series console is retired and every game on there that you thought you’d bought becomes completely unplayable.
