Xbox’s Disc-To-Digital Plan Rolls Out This August According To Leaked Roadmap

Xbox’s Disc-To-Digital Plan Rolls Out This August According To Leaked Roadmap

According to a leaked roadmap and a report sent to publishers that’s been reviewed by The Verge, Xbox’s previously reported disc-to-digital program will roll out to the general public this month. The roadmap also indicated that a wider rollout of original Xbox games on PC would take place in October, while Xbox 360 games are set to arrive on current-gen consoles beginning next year and into 2028. On X, a Brazilian language account shared a graphic of the roadmap that you can check out here, or see below.

The disc-to-digital program is an attempt at future-proofing the potential forthcoming end of physical disc drives by granting users a transferable digital license for games they own on disc. If a user inserts an Xbox One or Series X game disc into a console, it automatically creates a digital license for the game that’s bound to the player’s account. That license can be utilized across Xbox devices but should the disc be used by another party, say after the original owner has sold it at a GameStop, the license will transfer to its new owner and the original owner will lose access to the game.

In addition to disc-to-digital, Xbox has other plans for making its back catalog more widely available. Last month, Xbox released four of its original games on PC—Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Conker: Live and Reloaded, Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, and Fuzion Frenzy—and the roadmap suggests it’s bringing more to PC this fall. Xbox also included a note to publishers in the leaked document.

For both programs, Xbox manages all engineering, certification, and support efforts. You, the publisher, keeps full control over rights, pricing, and brand; your only lift is opting in and setting commercial terms. Both programs reactivate dormant SKUs, unlock new audiences on PC and handheld, and create ready-made re-release opportunities — no porting efforts required.

All of these developments seem to be a part of Asha Sharma’s great Xbox reset. And while these developments are heartening for those of us with a library of physical Xbox games (or those who just want to ensure Lost Odyssey remains accessible in the near and far future), there is a cynicism to it all. When you’ve all but stopped up your new release schedule by cancelling projects, gutting your development teams, and spinning off the rest, the only way you’re gonna get new content in your pipeline is by filling it with old stuff.
