007 First Light Could Get a Sequel ‘If This Goes Really Well’

007 First Light Could Get a Sequel ‘If This Goes Really Well’

There could be more Bond games to come from IO Interactive if 007 First Light makes a big enough splash. Classics like GoldenEye 007 and 007: Nightfire are still beloved by many, but the James Bond IP has gone for a long time without a quality game release in more recent history. Fans are hopeful that 007 First Light will turn things around for the franchise, and if it does, a sequel could be in the cards.

After a short delay, 007 First Light will release on May 27, 2026, so the wait is nearly over. So far, expectations are high, thanks to IO Interactive’s reputation from the Hitman series and largely positive reactions from early previews, but it’s impossible to tell how First Light will stack up against its predecessors until it’s fully in the public’s hands. With just a few weeks left to go before that happens, the title’s developer is now looking further, raising the possibility of a potential series.

007 First Light Fans Have Until May 25 to Claim Free Download for It

The new James Bond game is still a few weeks away from release, but 007 First Light fans can get a free download ahead of time.

007 First Light Boss Says ‘Why Not?’ About a Potential Sequel

Speaking with The Game Business, IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak said a sequel could very well be on the table, depending on First Light‘s reception. While he did not specify if the studio already has any plans for another game, he expressed confidence in the team’s relationship with Amazon, which owns the Bond IP, and said, “If this goes really well, and it’s a beloved thing from the community, why not?” Abrak had previously confirmed that 007 First Light will have major post-launch support, so there will be content to look forward to regardless, but it now sounds like IO could go much further when keeping the Bond franchise alive in video game form.

The CEO did say both IO Interactive and Amazon have lingering questions about how this iteration of Bond will be received. Abrak suggested the possibility of a sequel hinges on whether there will be “a community that likes him and wants to see more,” which introduces an air of uncertainty despite his confidence that the team has developed a great game. For now, it seems possible that things could go either way, as 007 First Light is one of the most anticipated games of 2026, which could be a recipe for financial success or could mean there’s a higher bar to live up to.

There’s a lot riding on First Light, and not just because of the weight of fan expectations. IO Interactive first announced the then-codenamed Project 007 in 2020, so the game has been in development for quite some time. In this latest interview, Abrak confirmed that 007 First Light is IO’s “most ambitious project” to date in terms of both scale and budget. Thankfully, it sounds like everyone involved is confident in this investment, with Abrak saying the Amazon team has become “huge supporters” of the project after playing the game, but this massive scope may raise performance expectations, at least when it comes to justifying future games.

As the wait comes to a close, there are good signs on the horizon. Once the game launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, it may not be too long of a wait until the delayed Switch 2 version comes out. Abrak told The Game Business that 007 First Light is already running on Switch 2, and the team is just polishing the version to make sure it offers as good an experience as possible later this summer. For everyone else, there’s less than a month left before they can try First Light out for themselves.
