007 First Light Just Made a Strong Case for Leaving Multiplayer Out of Single-Player Games

IO Interactive recently revealed in a blog post via the studio’s official website that 007 First Light has sold over 4 million copies. Not only does this make 007 First Light one of the best-selling games of 2026, but it’s also IO Interactive’s fastest-selling game ever. In an age where it feels like every AAA release is trying to shoehorn multiplayer or live-service elements into what would be best left as a single-player title, 007 First Light is proof that a game can be a dedicated solo experience and make plenty of money.

There are a few solid James Bond games out there, but 007 First Light has taken the throne as the quintessential Bond sim. From actor Patrick Gibson’s performance as the beloved Ian Fleming character to the fun blend of action and stealth, 007 First Light has been one of this year’s strongest games so far. Of course, there are still plenty of AAA heavy hitters on the way, but 007 First Light has been a perfect example of how single-player games should be handled.

007 First Light’s Impressive Sales Prove That People Still Love Strictly Single-Player Games

I completely understand why some developers add multiplayer or live-service elements to games that don’t necessarily need these kinds of features. It’s ultimately a tool to keep the game relevant for as long as possible. No dev team wants to see their many years of hard work be enjoyed for a mere moment and then get left behind and forgotten with the passage of time. A good game deserves to thrive and be popular far longer than the few months following post-launch. However, staying relevant in today’s gaming world is far harder, as so many huge releases and changing trends can quickly take over the spotlight.

For example, games like Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei have multiplayer counterparts, despite being a game focused on a single-player narrative. The multiplayer mode for both is called Legends, and it’s genuinely a really fun time. However, it’s also largely unnecessary. Ghost of Tsushima and Ghost of Yotei would still be fantastic games without Legends. Sucker Punch simply wanted to add more for gamers to experience after finishing the story. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to give players more, but there are ways to do so without adding multiplayer into the mix.

The Industry’s Live-Service Reign Is Ending, and Fully Single-Player Games Are Back in Fashion

Live-service games have largely defined the last 10 years of gaming, and 2026 makes it feel like that influence is finally dwindling. Fortnite is undoubtedly one of the biggest live-service moneymakers ever, but it also inspired plenty of others to try and replicate that success. Being as successful as Fortnite is difficult for even the biggest developers and publishers, and this race to be the new live-service champ quickly oversaturated the market.

One of the most notorious examples of this was Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. In many ways, this Arkham spin-off felt like the beginning of the end for live-service titles. Since then, Sony’s live-service plans have been even more disastrous. Multiple studios have been shut down alongside several big game cancellations, and it’s a sign that the tides are shifting.

The most recent victim of Sony’s live-service goals is Horizon Hunters Gathering. The game was intended to be a live-service Horizon spin-off, but Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier has reported that the game is being rebooted as a co-op experience and stripping the live-service components.

A lot of people simply want to play great games that don’t push multiplayer or the burden of live-service features. The success of recent games like Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem earlier this year presented a strong sign that 2026 was off to a good start for single-player games. Many of the best games of 2026 so far have been single-player, and 007 First Light‘s sales continue to make the case that the industry’s future could lie in solo experiences over multiplayer and live-service.

007 First Light Knows That Multiplayer Isn’t the Only Way to Give a Game Long-Term Replayability

IO Interactive has promised plenty of 007 First Light DLC content, and this is what’s going to help keep the game exciting down the road. These kinds of updates and expansions bring more to players without forcing them into a playstyle that they might not really want. Not every fan is going to agree with this, though. There are plenty of people out there who would love a multiplayer mode in 007 First Light. Frankly, it makes sense. Pitting MI6 agents against one another in a Deathmatch-style mode sounds like tons of fun, but IO Interactive is focused on doing one thing exceptionally well instead of trying to offer a little bit of everything.

007 First Light has been a perfect example of how single-player games should be handled.

Games like The Last of Us and God of War are also well aware that sometimes what works best is a strong story and gameplay that inspires people to return. The Last of Us Part 2‘s No Return mode and God of War Ragnarok‘s Valhalla DLC further showcase how single-player games can embrace post-launch content without losing that solo-focused identity.

Beyond 007 First Light, 2026 Still Has a Wild Number of Dedicated Single-Player Games on the Way

  • Star Wars: Zero Company
  • Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy
  • The Blood of Dawnwalker
  • Onimusha: Way of the Sword
  • Marvel’s Wolverine
  • Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave
  • Silent Hill: Townfall
  • Control Resonant
  • Grand Theft Auto 6

Not all of these are blockbuster AAA games like 007 First Light, but it’s a solid example of just how many single-player games are still slated to come out this year. Single-player games with great stories often have a hard time nailing the mechanics, and vice versa, but 007 First Light‘s gameplay excels at both. IO Interactive has demonstrated just how successful a single-player game can be when resources are poured into specific goals instead of trend chasing.

There is even talk that a 007 First Light sequel could happen. Of course, only time will tell, but it wouldn’t be too surprising. The sales numbers are evidence that IO Interactive managed to nail what makes James Bond’s world so compelling and entertaining. After so many years of live-service and multiplayer seeming so essential, 007 First Light and IO Interactive prove that these features aren’t necessary for success at all.
