Dead by Daylight Developer Behaviour Interactive Hit With Layoffs

Dead by Daylight developer Behaviour Interactive has just confirmed that it’s laid off an unknown number of developers. While it’s unclear how many developers were affected by these layoffs, they were reportedly targeted towards the Dead by Daylight studio’s mobile and external development departments.

A Canadian developer and publisher, Behaviour Interactive was founded in 1992 under the name Megatoon. As both Megatoon and then as Artificial Mind and Movement Inc., the developer operated primarily as a work-for-hire studio, assisting development on a range of Ubisoft, Konami, Sony, Nintendo, and Disney games, many of which were targeted towards younger audiences. The studio did deliver a handful of its own original games as well, with titles like Wet and Naughty Bear likely being the most recognizable. In 2016, Behaviour Interactive released Dead by Daylight, by far its most popular game, which itself has spawned several spinoffs.

According to its own official website, Behaviour Interactive is home to over 1,200 employees. Today, that number grows smaller. As per a report from Game Developer, Behaviour Interactive has laid off an undisclosed number of developers. A Behaviour Interactive spokesperson told Game Developer that the affected employees came from the studio’s mobile and external development departments, as the demand for these types of projects has reportedly declined.

The official statement provided to Game Developer by the Behaviour Interactive spokesperson is as follows:

“As we conclude our remaining engagements and do not foresee comparable opportunities in the near term, we have made the decision to part ways with some colleagues. Those decisions are never easy, and we are grateful for the contributions of the affected employees, who have helped shape Behaviour and support our partners over the years.”

As Game Developer’s Chris Kerr points out in their report, these layoffs come just a month after Behaviour Interactive acquired 7 Days to Die developer The Fun Pimps. Neither Behaviour nor The Fun Pimps has disclosed the monetary value of the acquisition. Back in September 2024, Behaviour Interactive acquired Red Hook Studios, the developer behind the Darkest Dungeon duology. Along with continued development of Dead by Daylight, Behaviour Interactive is currently working on a new entry in the Serious Sam franchise, which is set to be published by Devolver Digital.

Behaviour Interactive Joins an Ever-Growing List of Developer Layoffs

Unfortunately, stories like this one have become an almost daily occurrence. Just three days ago, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 and Rumbleverse developer Iron Galaxy was hit with its own round of layoffs. Iron Galaxy stated that these layoffs were an attempt to “adopt a new posture to accept these current market conditions as permanent.” These most recent layoffs were the second wave to hit Iron Galaxy in just 14 months.

In 2026 alone, there have been at least 12 major instances of video game industry layoffs. These layoffs have impacted all types of studios, from smaller-scale studios like Starbreeze and Build a Rocket Boy, to gigantic AAA companies like Ubisoft, EA, Warner Bros., and Epic Games.
