Super Mario Galaxy 2 Update Adds a New Epilogue

Nintendo has pushed a brand-new update for the Nintendo Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2, adding a new chapter to the in-game Storybook. Players will need to unlock the Final Chapter of the Storybook before accessing Super Mario Galaxy 2‘s epilogue chapter.

The Super Mario Galaxy games have often been among the most highly regarded 3D entries in the iconic franchise. The cosmic platformers, first released for the Wii, served as the first introduction of Rosalina and were praised for their creative level design, gameplay, and the story of the first game, in particular. Nintendo officially brought back Super Mario Galaxy as part of Super Mario 3D All-Stars for the series’ 35th anniversary, and later re-released both Super Mario Galaxy games for the 40th anniversary. Now, the Switch version of Super Mario Galaxy 2 is getting another update, adding new story content to the game.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 Adds New Epilogue Storybook Chapter

Nintendo officially rolled out the Version 1.4.0 update for Super Mario Galaxy 2 on April 29. The update introduces a new chapter to the game’s Storybook, serving as an epilogue to the pre-existing story content. Super Mario Galaxy 2‘s patch notes provide clarity about how fans can unlock the new chapter, first needing to unlock the Final Chapter of the Storybook, then clear any Galaxy and earn a Power Star. Nintendo also confirmed that the update came with some minor adjustments intended to “ensure a smoother gaming experience” on Switch consoles. No specific bug fixes were listed within the Version 1.4.0 update’s patch notes.

The new storybook content for Super Mario Galaxy 2 comes as Rosalina and the Super Mario Galaxy games have been firmly in the spotlight. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie was billed as one of the biggest events of the franchise’s 40th anniversary, acting as a sequel to Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film marked the first theatrical appearance of Rosalina and Bowser Jr., while retaining much of the main cast from the first movie. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie also featured an unexpected appearance from Star Fox, sparking further speculation that Nintendo and Illumination may be planning a Super Smash Bros. movie.

The Super Mario Galaxy re-releases and movie have been far from the only big releases during Mario‘s 40th anniversary. The festivities included a brand-new Mario sports game with the debut of Mario Tennis Fever, which added the new Fever Shot mechanic to the franchise. One of Mario‘s biggest releases on the original Nintendo Switch also received an upgrade on Switch 2, launching a Switch 2 Edition for Super Mario Bros. Wonder, which also introduced the Meetup at Bellabel Park expansion.

The Mario franchise’s 40th birthday isn’t over yet, with more still to come from the series throughout the coming months. Nintendo is gearing up to debut Yoshi and the Mysterious Book on May 21, whisking the iconic green dinosaur into a storybook environment inside a living encyclopedia. Nintendo has also added multiple new Mario games to Nintendo Switch Online for the anniversary, including Mario’s Tennis and Mario Clash on Virtual Boy and Mario vs. Donkey Kong on Game Boy Advance for 2026’s Mario Day. The Mario franchise has given fans plenty of reason to celebrate, with lots more sure to be in store following the 40th anniversary.
