Splitgate Devs’ Next Game Might Be Channeling the Titanfall Series

Splitgate Devs’ Next Game Might Be Channeling the Titanfall Series

In the ten years since Titanfall’s absence, fans have clamored for a new entry in the series, and it seems like the Splitgate development team is here to answer those calls with a spiritual successor to the franchise. While it remains unclear if Respawn Entertainment ever intends to return to Titanfall, it seems like 1047 Games will be the next in line to scratch the fast-paced, parkour, mech-FPS itch.

Titanfall and Titanfall 2 were among some of the most celebrated shooter games released in the 2010s—now widely considered a commercially overlooked franchise that deserved more love at the time. Since the release of Titanfall 2 in 2016, Respawn Entertainment has been busy with the mega-hit Apex Legends and the well-regarded Star Wars: Jedi franchise, both of which have been massive critical and financial successes. With a whole live-service game and a Star Wars IP to juggle, the general sentiment coming from Respawn Entertainment is that a new game in the Titanfall universe is unlikely to happen, much to the chagrin of fans.

Whenever It’s Time For a New Titanfall, Apex Legends Should Be Its Stepping Stone

Titanfall 3 may not be on the cards for a while, but if it does happen, Apex Legends should be the game’s most valuable stepping stone.

Leaked Videos Show Titanfall-Inspired Gameplay from the Splitgate Development Studio’s Next Game

However, it seems like there remains hope for something resembling the Titanfall franchise, and it comes from development studio 1047 Games, best known for the Splitgate series and now reportedly working on Empulse, an alleged spiritual successor to the Titanfall series. A series of videos has been leaked to Insider Gaming, and Tom Henderson reports that 1047 Games’ Empulse features all the staple features of Respawn’s mech-shooter, including wall running, grapple hooks, and boost pads. Most importantly, Henderson states that the pre-alpha gameplay he received shows players can use mechs scattered around the map, which apparently look quite similar to the mechs featured in Titanfall, complete with a gatling gun, missile launcher, and shield.

It seems like 1047 Games’ Empulse certainly has all the makings of a Titanfall game, and it should come as no surprise given how the CEO, Ian Proulx, has expressed interest in Titanfall 3 one day seeing the light of day. In the past, Proulx has stated that the next game in development at 1047 Games would be inspired by Titanfall and Call of Duty: Black Ops 3, both of which are among the most revered shooters of the era. How Empulse will pan out, however, is another question.

While Splitgate ended up being a huge success in 2021 thanks to its Halo and Portal-inspired mechanics, Splitgate 2 didn’t have that same luck. Following a weak launch, Splitgate 2 returned to beta, and the studio eventually saw several layoffs as the game continued to struggle, culminating in a rebranding to Splitgate: Arena Reloaded. Not to mention, Ian Proulx has been a somewhat controversial figure since his appearance at Summer Games Fest 2025, when he wore a “Make FPS Great Again” hat, causing discourse about the company and the CEO’s political leanings. Proulx would later apologize for wearing the hat, but not before souring sentiment from some fans regarding the studio.

Whether Splitgate: Arena Reloaded has struggled due to public sentiment regarding Proulx is somewhat of a complicated question, especially given how tired many fans are of live-service games. However, it still seems like Empulse could potentially be what the team needs to get the company back into the spotlight. A decade is a long time without a Titanfall game, especially considering that there is nothing else quite like it on the market besides Apex Legends, but even that game can’t fill the hole that Titanfall left. If 1047 Games plays its cards right, Empulse could be the Titanfall 3 that fans have wanted.
