Destiny Infinity Plans Revealed in New Report

Destiny 2 could have become ‘Destiny Infinity,’ according to a new report. Bungie has been struggling with Destiny 2 for a long time, as the game’s The Final Shape expansion was posited as the conclusion of the Light and Darkness saga, and thus of Destiny as a whole. Subsequent expansions didn’t perform according to expectations, based on a new report, and it’s clear that the game was not succeeding at retaining players or drawing new ones in. Between a FOMO-based seasonal approach, a new saga starting with The Edge of Fate, and internal issues at Bungie, Destiny 2 is meeting its demise on June 9.

There is a debate within the community about who or what is to blame, with some fans blaming Bungie and others blaming Marathon for Destiny 2‘s death. Regardless of the events that led to this outcome, there has been an outpouring of love for the game in light of the news of its upcoming end of support, with many Guardians sharing memories about their time in the Destiny franchise, fan art, thoughts about the situation, and hopes for a Destiny 3. The decision to end support for Destiny 2 seems final at this stage, and it’s unlikely that either Bungie or Sony will reverse it.

Why Destiny 3 Is Not a Given for Bungie’s Next Game

Destiny 3 may still be possible, but Bungie’s next chapter may depend on Marathon finding its footing after Destiny 2’s final update arrives soon.

Destiny 2 Could Have Been Destiny Infinity, New Report States

Destiny 2 player and game journalist at Forbes, Paul Tassi, published a report with information from his sources within Bungie. After the announcement of Destiny 2‘s final update, fans were divided and unhappy with the outcome, starting a petition to save the franchise with a Destiny 3. According to Tassi, Bungie was considering reverting to a one-expansion model for the game and renaming it Destiny Infinity, essentially relaunching the looter-shooter with a new approach and live-service formula. Destiny 3 was also considered, but neither plan was greenlit.

Tassi also goes over how his sources state that issues started with The Edge of Fate’s disappointing performance in terms of sales and player retention, but ‘alarm bells’ started ringing when Renegades, the Star Wars-themed expansion, did even worse than its predecessor. The report also makes a nod to a recent video from author and gaming insider Jason Schreier, who stated that making Destiny 3 would cost around $500 million before marketing and post-production support. Currently, Destiny 3 is not happening, according to Schreier, and it’s unclear if things will change. Likewise, Destiny Infinity was discussed, but ultimately, the decision was to end support for Destiny 2.

The official Destiny 3 petition has surpassed Marathon‘s peak player count, with almost 290,000 signatures at the time of writing. However, Tassi’s report mentions that this petition and the plan to have a fan-organized “server slam” for Destiny 2 on June 9 are unlikely to change anything, according to his sources within Bungie.

Fans will have to wait and see if anything comes from these efforts, but so far, it seems that Destiny 2‘s death is final, and Destiny 3 remains a pipe dream. If Marathon succeeds, Destiny 3 discourses may start again, but at this stage, it’s unlikely there will be any developments in the near future.
