If you haven’t heard of the new Soulslike game Stonemachia, you’d be forgiven—discovery is increasingly difficult in the indie game space, especially in popular genres like this one, and tons of games release on Steam every day. In Stonemachia, players take on the role of Zefiro—a Pawn like in Chess. As they adventure into the world of Medhelan, they’ll be able to adopt new forms and fighting styles to face enemies and bosses. That’s uniquely inspired as players can become a Knight, Rook, Bishop, and Queen. The story is described as a Dantesque Journey (meaning Dante’s Inferno) to face off with armies of angels to make it to paradise, complete with enemies, objects, and so forth, inspired by Italian art and folklore.

It’s also worth looking over the available reviews on Steam, as none of them appear to be the result of bots or anything of that nature. Most have a handful of hours in the game at the time of posting, and many of them praise it. Fineous calls it an indie gem on Steam that is “WAY TOO GOOD” and praised its soulslike nature, soundtrack, and art style, in particular. Raven appears to agree, praising each hit in the game and saying it feels like playing Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.
