ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Creator Just Revealed His Next Game and It Looks Incredible

A new game from Fumito Ueda, the creator of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, has been officially titled Gen Atlas. Previously introduced as Project: Robot, Gen Atlas‘ new trailer was unveiled during Summer Game Fest 2026, offering a glimpse of its world and characters. Beyond the mystery-driven universe that is often considered Ueda’s signature style, Gen Atlas also appears to introduce a new gameplay mechanic never seen in any of his previous games, which include ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian.

Gen Atlas was initially revealed during The Game Awards 2024, alongside a short clip showing the protagonist and what appeared to be their companion mech, a giant robot. Even that brief teaser was enough to suggest that Gen Atlas, then titled Project: Robot, draws heavily from Fumito Ueda’s previous work, but perhaps Shadow of the Colossus most of all.

Why 2026 is Already One of the Saddest Years Ever for Shooter Fans

Though it’s only halfway over, it’s become apparent that 2026 is one of the toughest times to be a fan of first-person and third person shooters.

Gen Atlas Is Fumito Ueda’s First Game to Feature Guns

The new trailer for Gen Atlas opens with the protagonist riding a colossal robot’s head like a spaceship. It then cuts to a brief look at the open-world map across day and night, suggesting there’s a full day-night cycle at work in the game. The protagonist also appears to revive a nonfunctional robot lying on the ground using their vessel, which is the giant robot’s head. The most intriguing moment comes later in the trailer, where the protagonist is seen firing at enemies in a third-person shooter style. Notably, none of the director’s previous games have featured a shooting mechanic, making Gen Atlas a first for Fumito Ueda’s work.

Every Game Directed by Fumito Ueda

Beyond the trailer, all that is confirmed for now is that Gen Atlas is a single-player, open-world game set on a post-apocalyptic abandoned planet. The giant robot seen throughout the footage is also said to reshape how players navigate the world, opening paths to areas that were previously out of reach.

Gen Atlas marks Fumito Ueda’s first game in about ten years. The director’s previous new IP was The Last Guardian, a single-player action-adventure game that carries the same fantasy themes that are staples of his work. Gen Atlas is also the second game fully developed by Ueda’s studio, GenDesign, which he founded in 2014.

One detail about the upcoming Gen Atlas that may disappoint some players is that its PC version will launch exclusively on the Epic Games Store, skipping Valve’s Steam storefront. Gen Atlas is being developed in Unreal Engine and will be published by Epic Games, which likely explains the exclusivity. That said, the game is still set to release on both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.

If the reactions to Gen Atlas‘ new trailer are anything to go by, the game seems poised to be one of the most interesting upcoming releases. However, Gen Atlas still has no official release window, and fans will need to wait for further announcements from developer GenDesign to learn more.
