Of the many applause-inducing reveals that took place during and around this year’s Summer Games Fest, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is certainly among the most celebrated. The game is poised to conclude the Final Fantasy 7 remake saga, bringing to an end the ambitious and unprecedented project that began back in 2020 with Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

This is exciting, but also probably a bit nerve-wracking for the game’s developers; there’s a lot riding on Final Fantasy 7 Revelation as the finale to this trilogy. Speaking personally, I’m quite anxious to see how Revelation brings the remake trilogy to a close, even though I’m already well-acquainted with the world of FF7, having played the original game and some spin-offs too. This is because the last third of FF7 is arguably its best, filled with mind-bending twists and satisfying character moments. Indeed, “revelation” is the perfect word to pair with this game, as it’s going to draw back the curtain on all the mysteries that have been built up by this point. It’s bound to cause quite a stir, which is precisely why its multi-platform release strategy is so wise.

Final Fantasy and PlayStation have had a fruitful, intimate relationship dating back decades, back when Xbox was merely a twinkle in Microsoft’s eye. The original Final Fantasy 7 was a PS1 exclusive back in 1997, after all. Perhaps this is why Square Enix partnered with Sony to make both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth timed exclusives for modern PlayStation consoles.

With nearly six years between releases on PS4 and non-Sony consoles, it’s clear that millions of gamers simply missed out on what is arguably Square’s most ambitious project to date. Naturally, the FF7 rights-holder doesn’t want this. As a result, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth was brought to third-party platforms just two years after its initial launch, and after Square’s president reported that Rebirth fell below sales expectations.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation Is More Spoiler-Proof Than Its Predecessors

It’s obvious that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation‘s cross-platform release is smart from a business perspective, but it’s notably consumer-friendly as well. Naturally, the prospect of all current-gen gamers getting equal access to Revelation is, in and of itself, a pro-consumer move, but its position as series finale makes this choice even more significant.

In 2024, Square Enix announced a company “reboot” built around a more aggressive multi-platform strategy for HD titles, including Nintendo platforms, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, especially for major franchises and AAA/catalog titles. That followed disappointing profitability in the HD games segment, with Square Enix president Takashi Kiryu saying major releases including Final Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth didn’t meet profit expectations.

Without getting into spoilers myself, it’s not an exaggeration to say that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation will be the most narratively significant entry in the remake saga so far, with twists that completely redefine the world and characters of FF7. These reveals make Revelation prime for social media engagement, as fans of the original will undoubtedly share their thoughts on the recreation of various beats, as will newcomers to the franchise.

But with everyone getting access to Final Fantasy 7 Revelation at the same time, it will be much easier to avoid spoilers online. Again, there was a gap of nearly five years between the PS4 launch of Remake and the Xbox/Switch 2 ports, meaning that non-PlayStation console gamers would have had to avoid major gaming discourse for this entire period in order to not get spoiled. It’s no big deal to avoid YouTube or social media for a few weeks while you beat a game; it’s much more inconvenient to avoid these platforms and communities for years while you wait for a game to come out.
