The Steam Summer Sale has slashed prices on roughly a billion games, and there’s no point in recommending traditional discounts, since everyone simply uses their wishlist to streamline the offers. So, let’s take a different approach by highlighting games on sale that will absolutely break you. If you’re into humiliation, these bargains should give you your money’s worth.
From fast-as-heck movement shooters to hard-as-hell slashers, we’ve picked out a wide assortment of discounted games that deliver punishment without sacrificing enjoyment. Honestly, hardship is a big part of the fun, making each victory feel as gratifying as possible while each loss serves as a stepping stone for future satisfaction. Steam’s summer sale might not be fantastic, but it has a few cruel highlights.
The Steam Summer Sale lasts until July 9, so there’s no need to rush to pick them all up right now.

Post Void – The Most Unforgiving $2.09 Speed-Run On Steam
A Real Bargain In This Market
- Sale Price: $2.09
- Usual Price: $2.99
- Genre: FPS, Roguelike
- Steam Link: Post Void
There is no one-size-fits-all “difficulty” that every game can and should adopt. Elden Ring and Devil May Cry 5 shouldn’t present the same style of challenge, and the same extends to releases within a genre. While sharing similarities with standard-setters like DOOM, Post Void approaches its hardship in a distinctive way.
Top Upcoming FPS Games Releasing In July 2026
From PC horror shooters to an all-time Xbox masterpiece, July 2026’s FPS games should have something to offer just about everyone.
The concept is simple: Your life force drains every second, and killing enemies is the only way to replenish it. Stopping or hesitation means death in Post Void, and players must constantly move forward and make split-second decisions to ensure they maintain an ungodly speed. Mistakes happen quickly, and they send you back to the start by wiping out your entire run.
Want to know what truly makes Post Void uniquely humiliating? A full run does not last more than 10 minutes, but that length feels like a lifetime when a “perfect” attempt can be eradicated by a boss specifically designed to strip away any illusion that you might have mastered the game. Who said that lasting 10 minutes isn’t impressive?

Armored Core 6 – The FromSoftware Mecha Experience
Oh, You Beat Elden Ring In Your Sleep, Did You? Well, Prepare To Be Humbled
- Sale Price: $29.99
- Usual Price: $59.99
- Genre: Action, Mechs
- Steam Link: Armored Core 6
In 2026, no developer is more synonymous with “difficult games” than FromSoftware, even though plenty of titles are more challenging than Dark Souls or Sekiro. Even if we stick with FromSoft’s projects, Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is the developer’s hardest release of the last decade, and don’t be fooled by the fact that you pilot a massive sci-fi mech. This isn’t a Gundam power fantasy (and that franchise’s games aren’t particularly easy either).
In this universe, weaklings cannot simply grind or summon a co-op partner to overcome a grueling enemy, and relying on brute force or solely stats will not get you far. Armored Core 6 designs its campaign around wall bosses that require players to experiment with their loadouts, punishing those who stick to a single build because they think they have figured out the perfect configuration. That super-cool mech that just wrecked the last 3 bosses? Well, scrap that sucker and start from scratch, as they have suddenly become obsolete.
Also, the fast-paced combat is punishing in isolation, and its ceiling is (somehow) far higher than FromSoftware’s Souls games. Frankly, I wouldn’t really recommend the game at full price to total newbies since it is such an acquired taste; however, at 50% off, Armored Core 6 is an easier sell.

UFO 50 – Retro Punishment In Many Flavors
Becoming Nintendo Hard
- Sale Price: $17.49
- Usual Price: $24.99
- Genre: Arcade, Strategy, RPG, Adventure, & More
- Steam Link: UFO 50
Most modern throwbacks replicate the aesthetic and gameplay loop of ’80s classics, but they tend to avoid replicating the infamous “Nintendo Hard” difficulty. UFO 50 decides not to pull any punches, putting together a collection of original games that capture the retro vibe in more ways than just the visuals.
Purely on “value,” UFO 50 might be the best deal in the Steam Summer Sale, as it comes with generally high-quality titles across an absurd range of genres. The compilation includes turn-based RPGs, platformers, arcade sports games, strategy, and so much more. Different as these games inherently are, they are bound by unapologetic old-school design philosophy, including a lack of checkpoints in many titles.
With no modern safety nets, UFO 50 exposes you to the world, challenging you to compete while relying on raw ability and gaming literacy. Even simply switching between games that have different control schemes and rules can be very difficult.

Darkest Dungeon 2 – The Road To A Meltdown
Hate & Horror
- Sale Price: $12.39
- Usual Price: $39.99
- Genre: Turn-Based, Roguelite, Tactics
- Steam Link: Darkest Dungeon 2
Full disclosure: I prefer the first Darkest Dungeon, and newcomers should start with that rather than the sequel. However, they are very different games, so it doesn’t really matter which one you pick up first.
Despite changing so much about its gameplay loop, Darkest Dungeon 2 retains the brutal tone and stressful combat of its predecessor, even if it achieves them in new ways. You shuffle four “heroes” into a stagecoach and travel across a Victorian apocalypse that dives into Lovecraftian territory, and your party’s mental stability might be a bigger danger than the horrifying monsters they meet.

Darkest Dungeon 2: Every Hero, Ranked
As players choose a team of four to take on Darkest Dungeon 2 with, a select few can survive the toughest difficulties while others are a liability.
DD2 combines too many mechanics, which can be challenging to keep track of during runs, but relationship management is among the most important. All the heroes constantly judge each other’s behavior and are inclined to develop intense hatred toward one another. This is stressful enough on its own, but the characters also have a literal stress meter that gradually builds towards a psychological meltdown that might as well be a game over (In most cases).
You never feel safe while playing DD2. It doesn’t matter if you have the most optimized party imaginable if your heroes hate each other, refuse to help a dying ally, or scream at each other until they derail an entire run.
5
Hades 2 – Godly Humiliation
Dash Your Way To Failure
- Sale Price: $20.99
- Usual Price: $29.99
- Genre: Hack and Slash, Roguelite, RPG
- Steam Link: Hades 2
Zagreus’ journey feels straight-up simple compared to Melinoë’s. While the story and characters are a bit more polarizing, Hades 2 undeniably improves the combat, greatly increasing its complexity. Basically, you cannot rely on spamming dash to get you out of hot water or to compensate for a lack of mechanical understanding.
Melinoë moves deliberately, and her peak damage output requires mastering her Omega attacks and managing her Mana pool. The forces of Chronos also seem to be far more up to the challenge than their predecessors, demonstrating improved spatial awareness and counters to last-ditch escape attempts. Unlike Hades, which is by no means an easy game, the sequel really forces you to stand your ground, time your spells, and actively think about every single step you take.

Rabbit and Steel – Welcome To (Bullet) Hell
MMO Raids On Steroids
- Sale Price: $7.49
- Usual Price: $14.99
- Genre: Bullet hell, roguelike, co-op
- Steam Link: Rabbit and Steel
Ending with a fairly unknown game, Rabbit and Steel is as difficult as it looks: very, very difficult. Mino_dev sought to create a co-op roguelike that mimics the thrill of taking part in MMO raids, without any of the filler that separates the high-octane boss fights. Whether playing alone or with friends, the process involves taking on multi-stage bosses that throw hell at you.
With cooldown skills and three classes, Rabbit and Steel pairs the basic elements of MMOs with overwhelming bullet hell gameplay that relies on visual cues and quick responsiveness. While some parts are fairly casual and fun, the difficulty level can suddenly explode and wipe out groups who are not quite as coordinated as they think they are.
Before buying Rabbit and Steel, I recommend trying the demo to test the core gameplay.
