August 25 Will be a Big Day for The Witcher 3 Fans

The Witcher 3‘s upcoming Songs of the Past story expansion is officially getting its first trailer on August 25. Geoff Keighley, the well-known creator and host of both The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest, has just confirmed that The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past will be shown during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026.

Released all the way back in May 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is widely considered to be one of the greatest video games of all time, with its overarching narrative, character relationships, side quests, and presentation still being heavily praised over a decade after launch. Another element that’s greatly strengthened The Witcher 3‘s overwhelmingly positive legacy is its two story expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, two large-scale DLCs that added new quests, characters, and areas to the already expansive open-world RPG. Now, 11 years after release, The Witcher 3 is getting ready to receive one last story expansion.

The Witcher Remake Needs Resident Evil’s Restraint, Not Wild Hunt’s Scale

The Witcher Remake going full open world risks losing the very things that made the original special.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Is Getting a Trailer on August 25

Towards the end of May, shortly after the expansion’s announcement, CD Projekt Red confirmed that The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past would be appearing at Gamescom 2026 in some capacity. Now, Geoff Keighley has just confirmed that the upcoming Witcher 3 expansion will get its very first trailer during Gamescom’s Opening Night Live showcase, which Keighley will host once more. Gamescom Opening Night Live will air on August 25 at 11am PT / 2pm ET.

Since its announcement back in May, CD Projekt Red and co-developer Fool’s Theory have both remained extremely tight-lipped regarding any of The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past‘s plot details or any possible gameplay additions or tweaks. One of the only details confirmed by CD Projekt Red (via an investor’s Q&A session) is that Songs of the Past will be an expansion around the same size as Blood and Wine, which itself added around 40 hours of new content to the already-massive RPG.

In this liminal space between The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past‘s announcement and its upcoming Gamescom trailer, fans only have the expansion’s official key art to derive clues from. Based solely on this Songs of the Past key art, fans have theorized that the expansion will focus on Geralt and Ciri’s relationship, as Geralt seems to be holding Ciri’s silver sword in the poster.

As Gamescom 2026 approaches, gamers can expect plenty more announcements like this one. Although official confirmations are scarce right now, a handful of rumors and leaks have started to trickle through. One is that Resident Evil Veronica will be shown during Gamescom Opening Night Live, though Capcom hasn’t officially confirmed anything just yet. When it comes to the actual Gamescom convention itself, quite a few renowned developers have definitively confirmed their attendance, with Xbox, Nintendo, Capcom, Ubisoft, and, of course, CD Projekt Red all locked in to appear in Cologne.
