Star Wars Detours, an animated comedy series created by franchise creator George Lucas and Robot Chicken creators Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, was first shown to the public at Star Wars Celebration VI in 2012. This was just months before Disney bought Lucasfilm. Once Disney showed up, it looked at the partially completed series and decided not to air it. Now, 14 years later, Detours will finally be made publicly available as part of a new art museum from George Lucas.
Yesterday, as reported by Entertainment Weekly, Green was part of a larger panel called “Inside the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art” at San Diego Comic-Con 2026. During that panel, the host asked Green if any of his work would be included in the museum. After quickly looking over to Ryan Linkof, senior curator and head of film programs for the museum, to seemingly double-check that it was okay to say something, Green confirmed that some episodes of Detours would be included when the place opens in September.
“We made a show with George, an animated series,” said Green. “He wanted to make Simpsons in the Star Wars universe. It’s called Detours, and there’s…going to be a curation of episodes from that show on display for the public.” Green later explained during the panel that working on the animated series was amazing. “It was literally one of the greatest experiences I think I’ve ever had,” added Green.
Back in 2013, Green confirmed that nearly 40 episodes of Detours had been finished, with over 60 scripts written for more. However, when Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, it looked at Detours and its comical spin on Luke Skywalker and other famous characters and got nervous. The company was working on a new film at the time, which would end up being Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and was concerned about reintroducing these characters to fans and the public via a cartoon comedy instead of their next big saga film.
“Detours was conceived and produced before we decided to move forward with the new Star Wars trilogy,” explained Lucasfilm and Disney in 2013. “And in the wake of that decision, Lucasfilm has reconsidered whether launching an animated comedy prior to the launch of Episode VII makes sense. As a result, we’ve decided to postpone the release of Detours until a later date.”
Turns out that postponement would be over a decade long, and only some episodes would get to see the light of day via a museum exhibit.
