The PlayStation 2‘s legacy doesn’t heavily feature first-person shooters, but the console wasn’t a bad home for the genre. TimeSplitters 2, Nightfire, Black, and Killzone were fairly big, even if they haven’t all stood the test of time. Still, great PS2 FPS games were in relatively short supply, and there’s very little reason to revisit them in this day and age.

Considering the lack of heavy competition, you might think that every fantastic PS2 FPS game had to be a guaranteed hit, but that was far from the case. Plenty of shooters flopped commercially, a side effect of releasing during the genre’s highly competitive golden era and on a system better known for JRPGs. Well, let’s shine a spotlight on those titles that failed to hit the mainstream mark 20 years ago.

Urban Chaos: Riot Response Is Rocksteady’s Solitary FPS Game

A Late-Arrival PS2 Gem That Delivers Aggressive Gameplay

Did you know that Rocksteady existed before Batman? Yeah, I find that hard to believe as well, but the developer actually had a life before the caped crusader. To be fair, Rocksteady only produced one game before Arkham Asylum, and it didn’t have much of an impact on the gaming scene. That said, Urban Chaos: Riot Response is pretty darn awesome and might have done better if it didn’t come out in 2006.

In the mid-2000s, the genre consisted almost entirely of military shooters or run-and-gun Doom clones; consequently, Riot Response‘s decision to focus on close-quarters arcade combat set it apart from the crowd. Armed with a riot shield that acts as an ever-present wall, you are constantly in a state of both offense and defense, both of which reward aggressive action. While the riot shield blocks almost everything, you need to lower it to shoot, creating a risk-and-reward system.

Riot Response brought quite a few other things to the table. The satirical presentation gives off Judge Dredd or RoboCop vibes, both of which produced far worse PS2 FPS games. The medal-based progression works well, and rescue missions introduce AI first-responders who are actually useful. The gunplay just feels good, too, a statement that can only be made for a handful of console FPS games from this era.

Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter Is Still A Technical Marvel

I’ll always have time for something called Mace Griffin: Bounty Hunter, as there’s nothing I love more than B-movie vibes in an AA game. Now, I’ll admit that describing Warthog’s 2003 shooter as “near-perfect” is a bit of a stretch, but the game deserves a shout-out for its technical ambition. Don’t let the title trick you; Mace Griffin aimed for the stars.

Hybrid games were nothing new by the early 2000s, but none of them had the arrogance to blend spaceship dogfights with on-foot FPS sections quite like this. Mace Griffin lets you swap between the two on the fly, with no load times in between. Most missions are designed to accommodate a variety of approaches, letting players decide how they will complete their objectives.

The actual gunplay doesn’t rank among the genre’s best as it can be a bit floaty, but it isn’t terrible by any stretch of the imagination. It is serviceable without achieving greatness, which is fine since the game’s selling point is the genre fusion.

Darkwatch Is Cooler Than Your Favorite FPS Game

Vampires, Gothic Vibes, Anti-Heroes, And High Moon

Darkwatch is the coolest PS2 FPS game, and “PS2” might be an unnecessary qualifier. We are talking about a supernatural western that casts you as Jericho Cross, a recently turned vampire armed with incredible weapons. That entire sentence reeks of awesomeness.

In an era filled with c-grade shooters trying to copy Medal of Honor or Rainbow Six, Darkwatch stood out for its gothic atmosphere, Unreal Tournament-esque gameplay, and willingness to embrace grim silliness. Even in 2026, shooters like Darkwatch are extremely rare, which helps its novelty hold up well. High Moon Studios’ pedigree is evident throughout the campaign, with top-notch action, fun character designs, a morality system, and a slightly tongue-in-cheek tone.

Although the PS2 version is worse than the Xbox release, Darkwatch came with split-screen co-op for the full campaign, which is always appreciated.

Project: Snowblind Is Simple Sci-Fi Shooter Goodness

A PS2 FPS Game That You Can Easily Play Today

Unlike every other PS2 FPS game in this article, Project: Snowblind can be readily picked up on Steam today, making it the most accessible. Obviously, there are ways to get any PS2 game running on modern systems, but it’s nice to have the option to actually buy one.

Born from the ashes of a failed Deus Ex title, Project: Snowblind transplants elements from that franchise into a traditional linear shooter, creating a straightforward FPS romp mostly devoid of the immersive-sim ingredients of its spiritual predecessor. While certainly lacking Deus Ex‘s “it” factor, Snowblind gets by on solid gunplay, empowering augmentations, and a toolkit that allows for player expression. Drenched in sci-fi goodness with an urban twist, the weapon arsenal ranks among the better ones of this era, with all the guns being viable.

Although I think the campaign loses a bit of steam towards the end, Project: Snowblind mostly shines as an action-heavy blockbuster that gives players just enough room to experiment.

Cold Winter Is The Best Spy FPS Game On The PS2

007, Eat Your Heart Out (Just Kidding, I Love Nightfire)

Swordfist Studios didn’t last long, but it blessed the world with 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand and Cold Winter. The former has a cult following, but the latter tends to be overlooked, despite being comfortably one of the better console-exclusive FPS games of all time. Unlike Bond’s glossy adventures, Cold Winter is a visceral espionage shooter fueled by blood and cynicism. It’s great.

After being freed from a Chinese gulag, an ex-MI6 operator named Andrew Sterling gets dragged into a global scheme that involves all the spy clichés that you could ever want, albeit presented with unflinching violence. Sterling accomplishes absurd feats, but he doesn’t come across as a superhero smashing through armies of men. He is tired and traumatized.

Cold Winter had an impressive-for-its-era cover system, destructible environments, and on-the-fly crafting, all of which were hardly commonplace at the time. The campaign isn’t perfectly balanced, and the gunplay feels stiff at times, but these are relatively minor criticisms in the grand scheme of things.
