Star Wars Keeps Losing Games That Sound Too Good to Cancel

Star Wars Keeps Losing Games That Sound Too Good to Cancel

The world of Star Wars games is vast and spans decades, but there are a lot of projects that never even make it across the finish line. Another canceled Star Wars game has come to light after being reported by MP1st, adding to the long list of Star Wars projects that got the axe. According to MP1st, Echtra Games was working on a project called Star Wars: Magellan, but production was shut down when the studio closed in June 2025. The report’s source is allegedly an anonymous ex-Echtra dev who had gameplay footage in their portfolio that revealed a third-person action game that also featured looter shooter elements.

Magellan is one of the many Star Wars projects that have been shut down before even being announced. It’s a frustrating trend for Star Wars fans, because these canceled games are reminders of what could have been. As the list of canceled Star Wars games continues to grow, it has me wondering how many other games based on the franchise are currently in development that we simply don’t know about yet. Magellan sounded like a game with a lot of potential, and it’s sad seeing this many Star Wars projects meet an untimely end when the concepts are so cool.

Star Wars Zero Company’s Best Comparison Isn’t XCOM Anymore

Star Wars Zero Company is looking like it will marry XCOM’s addictive combat with several qualities and subtle polishes from the Mass Effect series.

Magellan Is Just the Tip of the Iceberg When It Comes to Cool-Sounding Canceled Star Wars Games

The canceled Star Wars: Magellan project was set to be an action RPG centered around two differing classes. Players could either take on the role of a Mandalorian or a Jedi. This would have offered the best of both worlds when it comes to the fun combat options that Star Wars has to offer. Between shooting blasters or chopping away at enemies with a lightsaber, a game that allowed players to step into the shoes of a Mandalorian and a Jedi is something that a lot of fans and gamers would be thrilled to check out.

Magellan isn’t even the first Mandalorian-based Star Wars game that has been canceled, either. A few years ago, Respawn was working on its own Mandalorian video game, but EA scrapped the project before any significant details were revealed to the public. Respawn’s take on a Mandalorian-led story was set to be a first-person shooter that even had jetpack mechanics. Unfortunately, Star Wars fans’ dreams of getting to live out a Mandalorian fantasy never happened, and Magellan‘s cancellation adds more salt to the wound.

A Look at the Most Notable Star Wars Games That Were Shut Down

  • Respawn’s Mandalorian project
  • Star Wars 1313
  • Project Ragtag
  • Battle of the Sith Lords
  • Star Wars First Assault
  • Battlefront 3

One canceled Star Wars game that left many fans and gamers in mourning is Star Wars 1313. Instead of being centered around the Jedi Order or the Force, Star Wars 1313‘s story was going to be focused on a criminal underworld with a bounty-hunting protagonist. It was intended to be a gritty third-person story that revealed a more grounded side of the Star Wars universe that hasn’t been explored nearly as much.

Battle of the Sith Lords was set to be a Darth Maul-focused stealth action game, while the 16-player Star Wars First Assault could have been the franchise’s very own version of Call of Duty. To this day, there are still fans holding out hope that Battlefront 3 is happening. Before EA rebooted the Battlefront series, a third installment was in the works by Free Radical Design that would have offered seamless combat between land and air. Such an ambitious goal led to a variety of development hurdles, which ultimately led to the game’s cancellation in 2008.

As the list of canceled Star Wars games continues to grow, it has me wondering how many other games based on the franchise are currently in development that we simply don’t know about yet.

Project Ragtag rounds out the list of cool-sounding Star Wars games that will never be played. What made Project Ragtag so exciting is that it was being led by Amy Hennig, the creator of the Uncharted games. Project Ragtag was going to follow a group of outcasts with a narrative-driven third-person formula. Seeing so many games that had such potential get shut down is disappointing, but the good news is that there are still plenty of Star Wars games on the way.

Magellan May Have Added to the Canceled Star Wars Game Pile, But There Is Still So Much to Look Forward To

Even though Amy Hennig’s Project Ragtag was never completed, she’s still on track to make a Star Wars game. This new Amy Hennig Star Wars game was announced back in 2022 and is being made by Skydance New Media. There isn’t much known about the project, but it’s expected to be another narrative-driven game, which only makes sense, since that’s what Amy Hennig does best. Hennig’s project is one of many in-development Star Wars games, though.

Star Wars Games Confirmed to Be in Development

  • Star Wars Jedi 3
  • KOTOR remake
  • Star Wars Eclipse
  • Fate of the Old Republic

Cal Kestis fans have been eager for a Star Wars Jedi 3 announcement. EA and Respawn have confirmed that the game is in the works, but how far along is the question that many want answered. A trailer reveal could potentially happen at this year’s Gamescom or Game Awards, but only time will tell. The KOTOR remake has been stuck in development hell for years, but it’s reportedly still moving along. Even if the KOTOR remake gets canceled down the road, original director Casey Hudson made waves last year by revealing that he and Arcanaut Studios are making a spiritual successor with Fate of the Old Republic.

Last, but not least, is Star Wars Eclipse. This project is a bold Star Wars story from Detroit: Become Human developer Quantic Dream that utilizes the studio’s signature branching narrative mechanics. A Star Wars Eclipse release date is nowhere in sight at the moment, but Quantic Dream has assured gamers that the project is still on track. Between these in-development projects and this year’s Star Wars: Zero Company and Star Wars: Galactic Racer, there is at least a lot of great Star Wars content to revel in. I’m still going to be crossing my fingers for a game inspired by Magellan or Star Wars 1313, though.
