New Pokemon Release Officially Marks Mega Golisopod and Mega Baxcalibur’s Return

Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Golisopod and Mega Baxcalibur are officially returning on September 8 in a new update for Pokemon Champions, featuring their new abilities. Pokemon Champions has been getting small but steady updates since its launch in early April this year, and it currently features fewer than 200 unique Pokemon out of the 1,000+ in the whole series. The trend seems to be to release small updates and just a few new Pokemon at once, which can be a blessing and a curse for the meta because it won’t escalate, but then it may be stuck in a not-so-great state.

Though the game came out in October of 2025, all Pokemon Legends: Z-A Mega Evolutions have yet to be introduced in Pokemon Champions, and some of them still have no ability revealed. Abilities can make or break Mega Evolutions, and some of the new Megas from Pokemon Legends: Z-A didn’t really see any competitive play because of that, such as Mega Victreebel. Now, Mega Golisopod and Mega Baxcalibur are making their VGC debut, and they may be incredibly powerful with the right abilities.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A’s Biggest Loss is Pokemon Champions’ Biggest Gain

Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Pokemon Champions experiment with the battle formula differently, which bodes well for the latter’s upcoming release.

Mega Golisopod and Mega Baxcalibur Officially Coming Back on September 8

Pokemon Champions will add new Pokemon and Mega Evolutions on September 8, including Mega Golisopod and Mega Baxcalibur. A new post on the official Pokemon website shared the news that, alongside the Mega Z Pokemon and Rillaboom, Mega Golisopod and Mega Baxcalibur will come to the game. These were two of the fans’ favorite new Mega Evolutions from Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and they could be incredibly powerful as well. Mega Golisopod has some of the best stats in the game because its base form already has 530 BST (base stat total), getting to a whopping 630 with Mega Evolution. Likewise, Baxcalibur is a pseudo-Legendary with 600 BST, thus having 700 BST in its Mega form.

  • Mega Golisopod Stats:

    • Type: Bug/Steel
    • HP: 75
    • Attack: 150
    • Defense: 175
    • Special Attack: 70
    • Special Defense: 120
    • Speed: 40
  • Mega Baxcalibur Stats:

    • Type: Dragon/Ice
    • HP: 115
    • Attack: 175
    • Defense: 117
    • Special Attack: 105
    • Special Defense: 101
    • Speed: 87

These Pokemon are incredibly strong in terms of stats and moves, with Mega Golisopod being a prime candidate for the best Trick Room teams in Pokemon Champions due to its low Speed and very high Attack and defenses. Mega Baxcalibur’s Attack stat is one of the highest in the game, and its type combination is also very good in VGC, both offensively and defensively. The main issue might come from the abilities these Pokemon are given. Golisopod normally has Emergency Exit, which instantly switches Golisopod out of battle when its HP drops to 50% or less. If its Mega Evolution keeps the same ability, its effective power in VGC would be dramatically lower.

Baxcalibur has either Thermal Exchange or Ice Body, with the former raising its Attack stat when hit by Fire moves and making it immune to burn, and the latter recovering health when snow is on the field. Thermal Exchange would be decent for Mega Baxcalibur, though not amazing, whereas Ice Body would make it mostly worthless. It’s worth noting that Mega Baxcalibur in Pokemon Legends: Z-A was introduced as a reward for ranked, so there’s a chance that its Mega Stone will be tied to Z-A in Pokemon Champions like it was for Gen 6 starters.

On top of these Pokemon, Pokemon Legends: Z-A‘s Mega Heatran will come back on December 1, when the next Regulation for Pokemon Champions starts. The game will be quite different at that point, presumably with even more Megas and Legendary Pokemon.
