Double Fine Productions has set an October 14 release date for Thank You Bus Driver, a chaotic new PC game that mixes Crazy Taxi-esque reckless driving with policing unruly passengers. Officially the first Double Fine title since the company left Xbox Game Studios in summer 2026, Thank You Bus Driver will be skipping Microsoft’s consoles, at least initially.
Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2019 for an undisclosed sum, not accounting for the $13.2 million it paid to purchase the Psychonauts 2 publishing rights from Starbreeze Studios in the same swoop. The move was formally framed as a cost-effective way of bolstering the then-fast-growing Xbox Game Pass subscription service, which just turned two at the time. That arrangement ended after just over seven years, with Double Fine leaving Xbox and immediately laying off about a third of its workforce in July 2026. The studio entered its second independent era with full ownership of its IPs, which Microsoft had returned.
Thank You Bus Driver Locks Down October 14 Release Date
Double Fine Is Promising ‘Crazy Taxi Meets Papers, Please’
Double Fine formally unveiled Thank You Bus Driver in early September, just over two months into its post-Xbox Game Studios era. The developer describes it as “Crazy Taxi meets Papers, Please.” Players race along a small-town bus route while simultaneously enforcing an ever-changing list of rules among their passengers. Doing so in a timely manner is only part of the job, as the driver also needs to keep an eye on the cabin and collect enough of the titular “Thank Yous” to extend a constantly dwindling timer that is the only thing standing between them and a game-over screen.
Passenger offenses can range from making phone calls to clipping toenails, and dealing with them is considerably less bureaucratic than the Papers, Please comparison might suggest. Players can deal with rulebreakers by slapping them, or even throwing them out in case of repeat offenders. There is a small element of meta progression in between runs, as the collected Thank Yous can unlock bus decorations and alternate versions of the town.
Thank You Bus Driver Is Double Fine’s First Action Labs Game

The deliberately simple premise reflects an equally small development cycle. Thank You Bus Driver originated with Double Fine developer Will Koehler and was built by a small internal team in a matter of weeks, with studio founder Tim Schafer previously putting the total development time at around six weeks. The project will also be the first release under Double Fine Action Labs, a new label dedicated to highly experimental smaller-scale games produced without the budgets and lengthy schedules of Double Fine’s more conventional titles.
While the label itself is new, the philosophy behind Action Labs is anything but; it has clear roots to Amnesia Fortnight, Double Fine’s long-running internal game jam for rapidly prototyping new ideas. While studio officials are formally describing Thank You Bus Driver as an example of what might come out of a “polished Amnesia Fortnight project,” the black-and-white title did not actually originate from one of its game jams. The most recent such release is still the eccentric pottery brawler Kiln, which launched for PC and consoles in late April 2026. By comparison, Thank You Bus Driver has so far only been announced for PC, namely Steam, GOG, and itch.io.
