Steam Autumn Sale Just Made GTA 6’s Price Even Harder to Ignore

Steam‘s Autumn Sale is underway, featuring a slew of releases available at slashed prices. Steam’s autumnal sale event is taking place now through October 8, with curated deals on games from all genres, from horror to RPG. There is truly something for just about everyone. The platform’s sales section includes beloved indie titles played by streamers and YouTubers, along with larger AAA titles from companies like Capcom and IO Interactive that sit at a fraction of their original prices.

This serves as a great excuse for gamers to try out new titles not previously available to them due to price constraints, effectively lowering that pesky barrier to entry. Seeing how games are being priced these days, it is extremely refreshing to get big names for under $50. Steam’s special pricing this fall season gets me feeling nostalgic, reminding me of the days when games didn’t cost almost my entire paycheck to play. Those were the days.

How to Turn $100 Into a Monster Steam Library This Winter Sale

Steam’s Winter sale has thousands of discounts, so here’s how to get nine top-rated games on a limited budget of less than $100.

Steam’s Autumn Sale Has Deals That Put GTA 6’s Price Tag to Shame

In a world full of overpriced games, Steam is doing its best to mitigate the issue with hefty sales. It is an encouraging change, one that makes gaming much more accessible to folks from all walks of life. Bottom line? You don’t need to be a millionaire to play fun video games. As of now, Steam’s Autumn Sale features some older titles and an impressive number of games released just this year. This includes fan-favorite Capcom release Resident Evil Requiem, LEGO Batman, and 007 First Light. These are around $70 games that are already selling for under $50.

Resident Evil Requiem is currently $48.99, PRAGMATA is $47.99, and 007 First Light is also down to $48.99. LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight joins the party also at $48.99. Indie title Big Walk is down to $15.99, while brawler Stick it to the Stickman is just $5.99. Looking for something strategy-based? Endless Legend 2 is down to just $24.99, while Xenonauts 2 is only $19.99. Popular titles at an affordable price? Virtually unheard of.

This puts a price tag like Grand Theft Auto 6‘s into perspective, shining a spotlight on the upcoming Rockstar Games game that is hard to ignore. Games from the same calendar year are roughly $30 less than GTA 6‘s hefty $79.99 price tag. That’s not even including the price of the game’s Ultimate Edition, which is priced at $99.99. The bottom line? Video game pricing has gotten out of control. When compared to prices put on release from the same year, GTA 6‘s pricing looks astronomical. This argument comes from extremely frustrated fans, especially angry about the new title’s Vice City Collection, retailing for $399.99.

This premium collector’s box set contains physical merchandise and goodies, but it doesn’t even come with the game. Steam’s sale is further axing prices on 2026 games, which makes GTA 6‘s price tag stick out like a sore thumb. Fan fatigue is real. While audiences want to continue to support some of their favorite franchises, like Grand Theft Auto, it can be a massive ask to make them spend $80 on a single game sans perks.

I believe the momentum of the game’s eventual release is what is eclipsing that price tag. While fans are still outraged, this is a game that GTA fanatics have been waiting for for years. Grand Theft Auto 5 came out 13 years ago, a massive gap in time without any news of a new game. The game’s absence was so prevalent that it became a viral meme, with fans joking that the impossible would happen before they ever got their hands on GTA 6. Finally, in 2023, Rockstar shared a trailer for the game that fans thought would never come, and it broke the internet.

So, now that we’re here, and the game is officially set to launch, the only barrier that stands in eager fans’ way now is that price tag. It’s a major disappointment. Years of waiting and wondering culminated in a game that cost more than some allot for a week’s groceries. As mentioned, I think the hype will outweigh the cost, meaning fans will likely still splurge, even if it hurts their wallets just a little. It is still simply a jarring sight.

To see Steam drop prices on 2026 games that are just as popular as GTA 6 to under $50, while the Rockstar title’s base price is $80. It makes GTA 6‘s price seem astronomical. It is a glaring issue not just with GTA 6, but with the gaming industry as a whole. If I may get on my soapbox, I grew up at a time when video games were a baseline of $50 to $60, depending on the game and the specific system it belonged to. These days, titles can cost up to $70 or $80, far too much, in my opinion, for what is basically a single-use product. Compare this price to 2013’s GTA 5 at $60, and the cost debacle only gets worse. If GTA wants to keep its fanbase hooked, pricing needs to stay consistent.

Why are Video Games so Expensive? Here’s the Breakdown

As the years have gone by, pricing on video games has only risen, with no stop in sight. Games are currently leveled out at around $70 to $80, with extreme examples usually priced at around $100 for fancier releases often equipped with some sort of collector’s item. To understand video game pricing and why Rockstar’s latest title comes at the cost it does, one must also understand how a video game is made. A few main factors tend to determine the price of a game. In short, making a video game is extremely costly.

According to an article written by Innovecs Games, a game development studio, it costs around $80 million to $300 million to create most modern releases. Larger teams behind games need to be paid more for their time. Labor costs are increasing, which means more money is needed to pay these developers for years at a time. Voice acting and motion capture, sweeping orchestral scores, realistic 3D graphics, and extensive quality assurance are now industry standard, and all of these facets cost lots of money to achieve.

In a video interview with Wired, Dead Space and Call of Duty Series creator Glen Schofield spoke on the rise of video game pricing, pointing to rising development costs. While retail prices remained flat, the actual cost to build modern games multiplied by two to four times over the same period. All this, combined with how the purchasing power of the average person and the working class as a whole has decreased significantly during the past few years, means you get a market that is hard to please. Schofield remarked,

I don’t know who agreed on that (pricing). I surely didn’t. I think it’s the console guys who come up with the cost… I don’t want to put the cost on the fan, but (games) are expensive to make.

It is not really the games that are getting expensive, but rather the processes it takes to develop them. Developers and companies want to create something up to snuff, but don’t want to break the bank. They also want to make games that will make them money, hence the hefty price tag. With a hefty price tag come unhappy fans. It’s a vicious cycle that nobody seems to be happy with. Achieving that harmony between cost and quality is a difficult one; just ask Rockstar.

If GTA 6‘s pricing has taught consumers anything, it is that video games aren’t as affordable as they once were. Modern titles practically cost an arm and a leg. Players are no longer in the golden age of gaming, where titles were slightly less expensive but still just as great. Given how long the title was in development, GTA 6 likely cost Rockstar a fortune to produce. On paper, the game is massive, with an extremely detailed open-world concept. Even the team behind it is huge. Before pricing info was released, the game’s scale indicated to me right away that GTA 6 would cost some major bucks. While it is too early to say, I hope that GTA 6‘s pricing is an indicator of quality and attention to detail.

Steam‘s Autumn Sale is running through October 8, 2026, 10 AM PST.
